Specifications provide a written description of construction work including materials, quality standards, and other details not shown in drawings. Specifications are required for legal permitting, insurance, bidding, estimates, purchases, records, manufacturer information, and reference by other professionals. They describe the type and quality of materials, equipment, fixtures, workmanship, and construction methods. Specifications come in different forms from brief outlines to detailed descriptions and can reference performance standards or previously established specifications.

- 1. Specification Writing a written description of work to be done. St. Scholastica’s College Interior Design Department mode of construction and other informative data needed but not shown in the drawings. the written part of the contract documents.
- 2. Specifications is required for: The basis for which any of the following reasons: 1. Law ; for Bldg Permits and/or Settling Disputes 2. Insurance ; Bonds and Claims 3. Bidding ( contractors & sub contractors) 4. Estimates 5. Purchases 6. Building/Office records and reference 7. Project representative / supervisor 8. Manufacturers together w/ shop drawings 9. Owner 10. As needed by other Allied Professionals and Gov’t offices 11. References on Materials, testing, code standards, etc.

Working Drawings - Location of materials & equipments Specifications - type & quality of materials, equipments and fixtures. - Details, dimensions, over-all measurements - quality of workmanship - Interrelationship of space - methods of fabrication, installation and erection - Schedule of finishes, openings of doors and windows, gates, etc. - material tests and code req’ts. - Size of equipments and fixtures to be used. - gauges of materials and manufacturers’ equipments. - Dimensions in height in relationship to other existing structures - details of equipment such as capacity, operation, speed, etc.
- 4. Kinds and Forms of Specifications 1. Brief or Outlined Specification written during schematic & design development phase. Details not are yet indicated 2. Standard Specification written in complete phrases, clauses and sentences to describe the materials & methods of construction. 3. Streamlined Specification abbreviated, simplified or in incomplete sentences or phrases. Omitted words are replaced by commas, colons, semi-colons or dashes
- 5. Types of Specifications 1. Descriptive or Prescription Specs Describes in detail the material to be used and the workmanship required to fabricate, erect and install 2. Performance Specs Specifying results by formulating the criteria for each accomplishment 3. Reference Specs Makes reference to a specific standard that has been established by previous tests, projects or installation procedures.
