The sponge gourd are tender, 2.5 - 3.5 cm in thick, cylindrical in shape with smooth
green outer skin principally used as vegetables in many ways. Its inner flesh is white
fibrous. Commonly known as Gilki / Turai / Tori / Ghiya Tori, Chikni Turai, Jhinga
(Bengali), Janhi (Oriya), Neti Beerakaya (Telgu), Heera Kayi (Kannada). It is a good
source of Vitamin A and C. dietary fiber, riboflavin, zinc, thiamine, iron, and magnesium
It is used to cure jaundice, diabetes, to purify blood, and is used to cure skin diseases.
In India, it is grown in Punjab, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan
and Jharkhand. Harvesting is mainly done after 60 days of planting. It gives an average
yield of about 16 tonnes / ha. The average fruit size is 65g.
Seedlings are planted at the distance of 2.5 x 1.2 m between rows and plants. Fertilizer
application of NPK is applied after 7-10 days of planting, then at the time of starting of
lateral vine development, then at the flowering period. Fruit picking is done at 3 - 4 days
interval. It is a warm humid season crop. Fertile well drained loam rich in humus soil is
required. Seeds (12 – 24 hour water soaked) sowing (@ 2.5 – 3.5 kg/ha is done during
January – February and June – July, Harvested fruits are packed in baskets to avoid
injury and can be kept for 3-4 days in a cool atmosphere.
