- 12. The Basics -Attendance How much time should I spend each day? About 6 hours a week for ½ unit class 12 hours a week for a 1 unit (block) course What if I am sick or have an emergency? Teachers, facilitators, and parents can keep up with your attendance in class through the “User Progress” feature. It tracks the days and times you log in, as well as which sections you are working on and when you are working on them.

Work ahead if you know you are going to be away from your computer for more than a day. Make sure you have a back-up computer in case you experience problems. Then, make sure you have a back-up to your back-up.

- #7 This is your student menu of choices on the page you see when you first login. There are 2 ways to get to class from your Registration page: the Today I am interested in Or click MY CLASSES just below the banner and logo. PS DO NOT change any passwords until further notice! You may change or correct items in the Updating selection, but if you change your email address, you will have to validate the new one. Your GTID can be found for your parent in Updating my personal information. There is a 24 hour period between your enrollment and your ability to get into Orientation. Please be patient!
- #8 When you click one of the 2 options, how will you see where the Orientation class is?? Look for the box titled My GAVS Courses - to the right on the GAVS Courses homepage Click on the Student Orientation – Fall 2008 link to access the SOC
- #9 This is what the top of the page will look like - notice the navigation bars….talk briefly about these. Use drawing tools to circle areas What to do first: READ any news in the center box Click CHECKLIST in the top menu bar - print it out for a to-do list Click CONTENT - proceed through each unit, doing the assignments and READING carefully!!! Mention the final Orientation quiz - may take it as many times as needed. Talk about the units, some release to others; may take quizzes over again in this class - can re-do the final as many times as necessary to make 100%. Then within 24 hours will see class subject area under the GAVS Courses list - click the plus sign to see the actual course name to click upon! FAQs will answer lots of questions
- #10 The word CONTENT in the menu will tell you what is covered. If you leave off a sign-off or forget to do certain sections of the SOC, you won’t be able to move forward in the Content! Review again the requirement about the final test in Orientation - and the 24 hour wait until the class is released to them.
- #11 Beginning August 9 th at 10 PM, students who have made a 100% on the Student Orientation Quiz will be moved to their online course. The course will be available by 1 AM the following morning if you have finished your orientation prior to 8 PM. This is what a typical course homepage will look like - go over features briefly – Once in your course read everything on your home page and write down your teacher’s contact information Print CHECKLIST Click CONTENT to begin.

- #13 (if you have a webcam, turn it on now to tell students how important keeping up is – time must be planned) You may not necessarily be logged in to the course the entire time, but you need to plan on your work taking that much time. If sick Contact your instructor immediately to see what arrangements can be made.
- #14 A schedule of assignments and due dates is posted on your course homepage. Look at the checklist and the pacing schedule Assignments are due on the posted dates. Everything must be in by the last day of the semester. No extensions! Yes… we encourage students to take the initiative to work ahead For the first week day an assignment is late, 25% will be deducted; for the second day late, 50% will be deducted. After 2 school days, a grade of 0 will be given. Please be aware of the pacing guide and due dates for all assignments
- #15 Most can be completed on-line and require no face to face proctor. This varies with local school system requirements. For unit tests and quizzes, students will be able to access those from the Quizzes link within your course . Each course will have a performance-based final exam where you show off what you have learned during the semester. This is worth 5% of your final course grade. Each course will also either have a multiple choice final exam or an End-of-Course-Test (EOCT). These exams are worth 15% of your final course grade.
- #16 EOCT’s are only required if you are taking the B semester of the courses listed here or are taking the AB of the courses listed. If you are taking the A semester, you do NOT have to take the EOCT. EOCT test dates and times will be posted; you will also receive an email telling you when and where. Public school take at school

- #19 If your instructor cannot help, you may need the D2L helpdesk - see tollfree number - ask your teacher first; don’t overuse the D2L help please!!! Examples: can’t get your assignment in the Dropbox or can’t see some part of your navigation bar that you usually see, etc.
- #20 When you reach this slide, make sure student know they should look in the pager and ask a classmate who is online a simple question? This will keep the teacher from getting so much email. Remind them not to email everyone in the class.
- #21 Click on the links to access your resource centers. In addition to your school’s facilitator, GAVS has counselors that are there for help.
