traffic fatalities in
Sri Lanka
An accident involving a single moving vehicle or several moving
vehicles in which one or more persons are killed within 30 days of such
accident [ Motor traffic (Amendment) act no 8 of 2009 ].

Motor Cars
• Promotion of the usage of vehicles with air bags(front, side)
• Making seat belt use in rear seat passengers mandatory
• Usage of proper functioning vehicle(brakes, tires…)
• Introducing speed adaptations in which vehicle determine the speed
limit for the road and vehicles with auto brake systems.
• Child protection devices – child proof door locks, harness
Motor Bicycles
• Improving bicycle visibility by lightening headlights even in day
time.
• Make the wearing of Full Face helmets mandatory.
• Usage of helmets with proper quality(SLS)
• Promoting the usage of safety jackets, gloves, knee guards and
boots.
• Educate the riders not to ride the bicycle along the blind spot of
vehicle.
• Resist the urge to ride between vehicles in traffic.
• Avoid speeding through tight turns.
• Making seat belts compulsory for the drivers as well as the
passengers.
• Displaying stickers in the wind screen should be prohibited to
increase the range of view.
• Distracting lights should be avoided.
• Rear, side protective door for passengers.
• Three wheelers must be replaced by four wheel vehicles.(mini
cars)
• Increase age limit for three wheel drivers.

Strategies to reduce road traffic fatalities
• Displaying luminous stickers on the windscreen should be
prohibited.
• They should be informed not to displaying distracting lights
other than headlights and signal lights.
• Passengers shouldn’t be allowed to travel in the foot boards.
• Usage of unnecessary musical horn sounds should be prohibited.
• Modifying the interior of the bus shouldn’t be allowed as it may
exaggerates the damage to the passengers during an accident.

• Setting and enforcing speed limits.
• Mandatory seat belt laws.
• Safe driving programs should be conducted for drivers
• Ensure medical fitness of drivers (visual/hearing inabilities, limb
disabilities or impaired coordination).
• To increase insurance premium of risk drivers.
• Renewal of driving license at least every five years having
rechecked the knowledge on rules and regulations.
• Stay alert for people who cross the road without warnings.
• Introducing a score system for driving errors with fines.

• Educate school children, adults and elderly people on
road traffic safety.
• Include traffic road safety in school curriculum.
• Only cross where there are signals or crossing guards.
• Only cross on the cross walk when the walk symbol is
displayed.

• Establishing road symbol signs properly at road sides.
• Enhance road conditions.
• Establishing mirrors at tight bends.
• Fixing and maintaining traffic lights at busy junctions.
• Proper information about upcoming natural disasters and bad conditions
involving roads.
• Maintain the road sides clearly.
• Establishment of motivational alerts by sides of the roads.
• Make rules for limiting entry of vehicles to the urban areas to reduce the
traffic junk and to reduce road traffic accidents.
• Promote public transportation in urban areas.
• Increasing the number of traffic police officers leading to better
enforcement of traffic laws.
