"The Sustainable Development Goals, established by the United
Nations, serve as a blueprint for global peace and prosperity.
With 17 interconnected goals, they address various challenges
such as poverty, inequality, climate change and environmental
degradation, aiming to create a more sustainable and equitable
world for all."
Overview
The SDGs were adopted by the United
Nations in 2015. The 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development came into effect
on January 1, 2016. The SDGs are meant to
be achieved by 2030.
Sustainable Development Goals:
17 Goals to Transform our World
Pillars of Sustainable Development
Economic Sustainability: Initiatives promoting
inclusive economic growth and reducing income
inequalities on a global scale.
Social Sustainability: Aimed at ensuring universal
access to quality education, healthcare, and basic
amenities, fostering equitable societies worldwide.
Environmental Sustainability: Global conservation
efforts, sustainable resource management, and
climate change mitigation strategies, emphasizing
the urgent need to preserve our planet's
ecosystems.
Development is defined as ‘an evolutionary process in which the human capacity
increases in terms of initiating new structures, coping with problems, adapting to
continuous change, and striving purposefully and creatively to attain new goals.
Literally, sustainability means a capacity to maintain some entity, outcome or
process over time (Basiago, Citation1999). However, in development literature,
most academics, researchers and practitioners (Gray & Milne, Citation2013:
Tjarve, & Zemīte, Citation2016; Mensah & Enu-Kwesi, Citation2018;
Thomas, Citation2015) apply the concept to connote improving and sustaining a
healthy economic, ecological and social system for human development.
Definitions
Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present
generation without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their needs.
Our Common Future, Brundtland Report 1987.
