a Case Study on Systems-Thinking

Under supervision of: Dr. Mohamed Saleh

1. The Problem -- Identification

2. Symptoms of the problem -- Diagnosis

3. Expectations / Forecasts -- Studies

4. Real causes of the problem -- Facts

5. Scenario : “Tragedy of the commons” --Rhythm

6. Causal loop diagram –- Mind Mapping

7. Who holds the Blame? –- Role Play

8. Suggested Solution -- Conclusion
“Under ideal conditions, the system
 operates effectively but under adverse
weather it can’t adjust to the demands.“
          ____,Dealing with Air-Delays

       by CNN fortune & Money
Widespread Delays

Cancellations of Flights

Frustrated Customers

Great Losses
The number of U.S passengers rose to 635 million
last year, experts expect the number to grow to
            more than a Billion annually.
NIMBY (not in my Back Yard) attitude
regarding Expansions & Developing
facilities

Air traffic control systems are Outdated
Computers & Screens were updated with
no fundamental change in the way Traffic
is directed
Each individual player –each airline-
relies on a Common set of resources,
  without concern for the collective
     impact of everyone’s actions.

Here resources become overloaded.
The truth is there’s little
Airlines can do to tackle the
   problem, but Industry
   leaders shall return to
        Regulations.
Airlines & Government must band
together to:

 Upgrade infrastructure
 Develop new technologies
 Design incentives to entice passengers
 Design incentives to travel off-peak
Design incentives to use less Central airports
 Effectively plan for Shared-Future
