What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of all the web enabled devices that collect, send
and act on data they acquire from their surrounding environments using embedded
sensors, processors and communication hardware. These connected or smart devices,
can sometimes talk to other related devices and act on the information they get from
one another.

How the Internet of Things has changed our
lives?
There are many advantages of incorporating IoT into our lives, which can help
individuals, businesses, and society on a daily basis. Over the past few years
technology has become cheaper to make and easier to build into smaller devices with
little storage and computing power.
The internet has also become a lot cheaper to connect to and is much more accessible.
All these factors together have lead to the rise of the Internet of Things.
6
How is the Internet of Things continuing to
grow?
7
Overall Conclusion
All in all whether we like it or not, technology will probably take control of our
lives. These devices are making us lazy, by cutting out the simple jobs such as
shopping and cleaning. Technology is also taking over many jobs such as
manufacturing and checkouts at the supermarket. Technology could eventually
take over all jobs.
The obvious goal in the future is to have people seamlessly retrieve knowledge
and function on a day to day basis without having to sit down at a computer or
talk to another human.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 PowerPoint created by: Dominic, Jack, Adam and Gary
  • #3 Components embedded with electronics that connect over the Internet, allowing them to talk to us, applications and each other. The use of the Internet of Things has grown a lot over the past few years. It is now one of the most exciting, promising, well known, adopted technologies in the tech industry today. It has had a significant impact on the way we live our lives. It has enhanced the way we interact with our devices and with each other.
  • #5 The Internet of Things could allow you to wake up and experience the ideal day. You'd wake up in the morning to an alarm clock, for instance, which went off at the right time because it looked at your calendar or diary to see the time of your first meeting. The alarm clock backtracked to see how long it would take you to get ready and even checked to see what time you would arrive. Watches are no longer just for telling time. The Apple Watch and other smartwatches on the market have turned our wrists into smartphone holsters by enabling text messaging, phone calls, and more. And devices such as Fitbit and Jawbone have helped revolutionize the fitness world by giving people more data about their workouts.
  • #6 Assistance – these devices can help people who may have disabilities or illnesses. For example, people who may suffer from Alzheimer's can benefit from devices like this. There devices can remind them of what they may have to do. E.g. Amazon echo can tell them a list of things they must do that day. Other devices such as the kettle or the oven could also remind them when they are finished with the their task. Time Saving – Some fridges can now come with the function to keep check on stock inside of the fridge. These fridge will save time from you checking what you need to buy from the grocery shop. Some fridges even can order your shopping list of websites such as amazon if you ask it to. Health Monitoring – most smart watches now come with the capability to keep track of your heart rate and breathing. This can monitor your health and notify you of any alarming changes in your health. The data that the devices collect can be used to help a doctor diagnosing you if anything is wrong. Better Quality of Life – all these devices can allow you to have a better quality of life as it makes the tasks you would normally do in your day to day life automated. For example, the Amazon Echo can do tasks for you, such as ordering food and other goods from amazon and will also keep you up to date with the time, weather and the news. Home Security - Most home security devices are monitored and controlled either locally or remotely using easy to use applications available on mobile phones or smartphones. Typical IoT devices are security alarm, Camera, sensors, door lock etc. are used in home automation environment.
  • #8 Privacy and Security – with the introduction of these devices, it can really put your house and information at risk. E.g. Coin (credit card), Doorbell cameras and Voice/ Picture activated. Compatibility – not all devices will work for you. For example I got given a smart watch for Christmas. Unknowingly the watch was made mostly for connection with android phones and I had a iPhone. This meant the smart watch could only be used for certain applications and couldn’t be customised as well. Makes the User Lazy – with all these devices at your fingertips, it makes it really easy for the user to have to do nothing as their devices will do all the tasks for them. For example in the movie WALL-E it shows a good example of what happens to people when all their tasks are left to devices and technology. Employment – devices have slowly been replacing jobs in certain industries. For example, manufacturing and checkouts at supermarkets. Internet and Electricity Required – for most devices you are required to have the device connected to the internet to be used.

  • #11 As the internet of things (IoT) continues to grow, so will the number of applications developed to control internet connected devices and objects.   Health and fitness products targeting the consumer is set to drive the trend, the recent introduction of the Apple Watch Series 3 which has a much snappier performance, improved exercise tracking and greater independence from your paired iPhone. The watch also offers connectivity and network coverage wherever you are located. https://github.com/NARKOZ/hacker-scripts
