Teacher as an Agent of change
Towards
Gender Equality
Dr. G. Ponselvakumar
Teacher plays the important role in any persons
life since they are the one who shapes the life and
thoughts of an Individual person
• Teachers can change the thought pattern of
young students towards gender and its role by
their actions, attitudes, behavior, perspective,
approach, manner, outlook and mind set.
• Teachers are the first role model for a student.
HOW?
• Break the tradition male and female stereotypes
when giving examples to students.
SOLDIER NURSE
• Don’t limit what you ask your students to do.
• They can do more than what we think
• Encourage the students to participate in things
which are outside their comfort zone
irrespective of their gender.
• Should not split the students in to groups based
on their gender for doing activities always
encourage mixed gender group work and seating
arrangements.
• While addressing the students avoid gender
based language like he, she instead of that use
neutral languages like they, their, you etc..,
• Teacher should interact in a manner equal for
both boys and girls instead of being gentle to
girls and rough with boys.
• Books should be selected carefully. It should
be free from gender stereotype characters.
