SUPPORTING PROJECTS
SDI4Apps finished this year and it was an EU-funded project
managed by the University of West Bohemia from the Czech
Republic. The project is being implemented with the
concerted effort of 18 organizations across Europe. SDI4Apps
seeks to build a cloud-based framework with open API for
data integration focusing on the development of six pilot
applications. The project draws along the lines of INSPIRE,
Copernicus and GEOSS and aspires to build a WIN-WIN
strategy for building a successful business for hundreds of
SMEs on the basis of European spatial data infrastructures.

PROJECT IDEA AND RESULTS
• The aim was to do some precomputation, i.e. to
precompute ,in which land use type, each SPOI is
lying, and then to visualize the density of SPOI
filtered by different land use types.
• Initially it was thought that the WebGL library is
perfect tool for this task as it would allow interactive
filtering of land use categories. Unfortunately there
wasn’t time for this. So the map was created with the
help of Mapserver and is available now at:
https://goo.gl/pabypt . Two categories of land use
were selected for which heatmaps were constructed:
residential areas and areas used in primary sector of
economy (agriculture, forestry, mines).

• The main lesson learnt was that such combination of
these two datasets doesn’t bring anything
unexpected and doesn’t give much insights. What
would be interesting however is to try to use SPOI to
define the land use type of certain OLU objects,
which for now have land use attribute from not so
precise/reliable sources.

REUSE
• The idea to use SPOI in defining land use type of
objects from OLU dataset will be definitely reused.
It is very relevant for instance in Flanders region of
Belgium, where cadastral parcels don’t have land
use attribute and it needs to be derived from
somewhere. For now it was derived from Urban
Atlas and Corine datasets. But it was a very rough
guess. I think using SPOI for this purpose will give
more reliable results.

Since already 15 years Switzerland has been establishing its Swiss Federal Spatial Data Infrastructure (FSDI). The Swiss FSDI evolved from an infrastructure project to a prioritized eGovernment pillar covering all administrative levels. Policy making, establishment of a legal framework and a paradigm shift from data to service provision (including metadata, data models, infrastructure) were key milestones. geo.admin.ch is the implementation and the portal to the Swiss FSDI according to the Swiss Federal Act on Geoinformation. In 2012 geo.admin.ch has won the 2012 United Nations Public Service Award, 2nd place, in the category of “Advancing Knowledge Management in Government” which rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide. FSDI customers benefit from a very performant and very flexible spatial data infrastructure. Thanks to the flexible underlying cloud infrastructure it was possible for the Swiss Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) to handle the steady growth of the web traffic, which has doubled every year since 2008. This could be achieved by a novel combination of an open source software framework with an innovative cloud computing architecture resulting in an attractive cost/benefit ratio. A major economic benefit can be achieved with the establishment of geo.admin.ch in Switzerland. Some Federal administration benefits for decision-making, planning and improving efficiency of governmental processes are that data production can be accelerated and data exchange processes simplified. Other major achievements are leveraging open access, open standards, open source software, mobile support, map viewer user interface, mashups and API for all and, last but not least, scalability and agility on the infrastructure level thanks to cloud computing.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping societies and raising complex ethical, legal, and geopolitical questions. This talk explores the foundations and limits of Trustworthy AI through the lens of global frameworks such as the EU’s HLEG guidelines, UNESCO’s human rights-based approach, OECD recommendations, and NIST’s taxonomy of AI security risks. We analyze key principles like fairness, transparency, privacy, robustness, and accountability — not only as ideals, but in terms of their practical implementation and tensions. Special attention is given to real-world contexts such as Morocco’s deployment of 4,000 intelligent cameras and the country’s positioning in AI readiness indexes. These examples raise critical issues about surveillance, accountability, and ethical governance in the Global South. Rather than relying on standardized terms or ethical "checklists", this presentation advocates for a grounded, interdisciplinary, and context-aware approach to responsible AI — one that balances innovation with human rights, and technological ambition with social responsibility. This rich Trustworthy and Responsible AI frameworks context is a serious opportunity for Human and Social Sciences Researchers : either operate as gatekeepers, reinforcing existing ethical constraints, or become revolutionaries, pioneering new paradigms that redefine how AI interacts with society, knowledge production, and policymaking ?

3. SUPPORTING PROJECTS SDI4Apps finished this year and it was an EU-funded project managed by the University of West Bohemia from the Czech Republic. The project is being implemented with the concerted effort of 18 organizations across Europe. SDI4Apps seeks to build a cloud-based framework with open API for data integration focusing on the development of six pilot applications. The project draws along the lines of INSPIRE, Copernicus and GEOSS and aspires to build a WIN-WIN strategy for building a successful business for hundreds of SMEs on the basis of European spatial data infrastructures. PROJECT IDEA AND RESULTS • The aim was to do some precomputation, i.e. to precompute ,in which land use type, each SPOI is lying, and then to visualize the density of SPOI filtered by different land use types. • Initially it was thought that the WebGL library is perfect tool for this task as it would allow interactive filtering of land use categories. Unfortunately there wasn’t time for this. So the map was created with the help of Mapserver and is available now at: https://goo.gl/pabypt . Two categories of land use were selected for which heatmaps were constructed: residential areas and areas used in primary sector of economy (agriculture, forestry, mines). 8. PROJECT IDEA AND RESULTS • The main lesson learnt was that such combination of these two datasets doesn’t bring anything unexpected and doesn’t give much insights. What would be interesting however is to try to use SPOI to define the land use type of certain OLU objects, which for now have land use attribute from not so precise/reliable sources. 10. REUSE • The idea to use SPOI in defining land use type of objects from OLU dataset will be definitely reused. It is very relevant for instance in Flanders region of Belgium, where cadastral parcels don’t have land use attribute and it needs to be derived from somewhere. For now it was derived from Urban Atlas and Corine datasets. But it was a very rough guess. I think using SPOI for this purpose will give more reliable results.
