Needs, Not Standards Bring the humanity back to education! Remember the developmental needs (PIES) of students. Any teacher can make lesson into a “Standards Masterpiece”.
Developmental Needs = PIES Physical Intellectual Emotional Social
Focusing too much on state standards creates lessons that are like a museum: perfect and static.
Focusing on the “PIES” helps to create lessons that are like a house that is lived in: comfortable and realistic.
Our students are in a large sandbox experiencing  physical ,  intellectual ,  emotional , and  social  changes throughout the next few years.
Physical Needs of Adolescents Adolescents experience more physical changes than at any other time in their lives,  except the first two years of their of life .
Physical Needs and Technology Instagram -  Take  pictures your  world . You Tube -  Move  along with videos of plays, sports, dancing and musicians. Nike Boom and iFitness -  Workout!  or  Lift Weights!

Adolescents acknowledge and understand their sandbox is bigger, but tend to focus more closely on specific areas and then move to other areas of the sandbox.
Intellectual Needs of Adolescents Adolescents begin to increase their ability to execute abstract thought processes,  though often overlooked because it’s not as obvious as physical changes .
Intellectual Needs and Technology Veritasium -  Get  help with science. The Onion -  Experience  and learn satire. Philosophy -  Be  philosophical.  Play  Games!
