This story is taking place in a community where everything is
controlled by the government. People cannot make their own choice
because the government worried if they made a wrong choice.
In this community government try to make same and fair. They
choose the spouse for man and woman. They only allowed to have 2
kids in each family.
The Annex also the main place of the story. This is The Giver
dwelling where he spend all of his time there. It is located behind the
House of the Old. In this place, The Giver work a lot with Jonas which
is the Receiver
The Annex also the main place of the story. This is The Giver
dwelling where he spend all of his time there. It is located behind the
House of the Old. In this place, The Giver work a lot with Jonas which
is the Receiver.
The Giver gives Jonas memories. Memories is like a fake experience
which means its not real but you can see and feel it. Sometimes the
memories has pain. The first memory that Jonas receives is snow.

 Jonas is the main character of the story. He is twelve in the time. He is the only boy
who has pale colored eyes also he is matured, passionate and intelligent boy. In the
Twelve Ceremony which is when he turns twelve years old and he gets his
assignment as Receiver (receiving memories). He also can see colors.
While doing his jobs, Jonas have a lot of question about the community which makes
him frustrated and depressed but he has to be strong in doing it. He often debates
about unfairness of the community
 The Giver is the person who Give Jonas memories of life. He lives in the Annex in
his whole life (as long as he being the Giver). He finished his job as the Giver until the
Receiver finish receiving all the memories that the Giver gives.
 Jonas' Father is a nurturer and he works with babies.
 Gabriel is a baby where Jonas' father brings home because he has problem on sleeping also
he often crying in the nurturing center. He has identical physical characteristic as Jonas. They
both have same eye colors. At the end of story Jonas brings him to Elsewhere.
 Lilly is Jonas' sister where she doesn't believe about the elephant. She thinks that elephants
are only imaginary animals.
 Jonas' Mother she works in Department of Justice.
 Asher is Jonas' best friend Assistant Director of Recreation
 Fiona is a girl that Jonas like. She has same age as Jonas but she works in the House of the
Old.
 Rosemary is a girl which was the previous Reciever before Jonas. But she gave up for her job
and attended to be released. She also The Giver's daughter.

 The problem of the story is the government controls all the community and they
make all people are color blind (except Jonas, he starts see colors while he was 11).
There are no climates and no sunlight in the community no pain, and no hunger.
 Jonas feels unfair and he disagree with the government. He wants that people can
see colors and let them choose whatever they wants. Also in the community they
have releasing rules when people are against the rule. Releasing by it self doesn't
have real meaning. All people are release different ways. There also release one
baby when they are twin. Gabriel is the one who is going to be released but he
couldn't be released because he has sleeping problem.
 “Release” makes people sad and happy sometimes. So Jonas, as a new receiver
disagree about these rules.

 The Giver and Jonas works with all the memories and Jonas can feel the pain while he
receiving memory. Jonas almost gives up with this but with his courageousness he doing
it well.
 The Giver planned to “release” Jonas out of the community because he knows that
Jonas is going to be lose his patient here. So the Giver ask him to go out the community
with Gabriel his brother because Gabriel seems going to be like Jonas when he grows up
and in a reason that Gabriel has been transferred memory from Jonas.
 At the end of the story they got problems while they are escaping from the community.
Snow and cold are covering them but Jonas transfer warm memory to Gabriel so they
can survive.

 She was born in 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
 While she was kids he moves a lot because of her father job as an
army.
 She attended in Brown University and write books.
 She didn't graduated from university ( Brown University because she
married and had four children. They become her inspiration for her
works.
 Mostly her books is inspired by her children's adventure.
 She writes more than 20 books and most of them are known
including The Giver. The giver was published in 1993 in a period
where the public consciousness of political correctness was at peak.

 The story of this book is really interesting. It has a lot of mystery inside (ex: At the
end of the story is not clear). This book could be a dystopia which is strange and
everything could become bad.
 Living in the Jonas' community is like a machine because everything is controlled and
it is such fake life. If I were Jonas I might change the rule no matter how I do the act
because I agree with Jonas that that community is unfair. It is like a mini world which
only habited of his community. But there also the positive side of this story which is
the public has no fear, no hunger, and no pain which is good I think.
 “Release” in this story according to my opinion is get out of the community, not death.
Then at the end of the story I believe Jonas is not dead with Gabriel. They found a
new life after they lost in a snowy mountain and slide down the mountain because in
the condition that really extreme, Jonas transfers memory to Gabriel a memory of
warm. So its possible that they both survive. Also they found a house which has
Christmas tree that is full of lights and Jonas hears music for the first time.
Thank You!
