“ The Gospel of Matthew”
Authorship Church History ascribes Matthew as its Author. “ According to Matthew” the superscription is no later than A.D. 125  Critical scholarship has denied Matthean authorship. The book does not directly attribute itself to Matt’s hand. Supposedly makes use of Mark’s Gospel. Doesn’t have the “feel” of an eye-witness account.
Date Primacy of Mark A.D. 65-70: Matt is written later: A.D. 110 Some argue for A.D. 40-50. Most certainly it was before the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70
Place of Writing Syrian Antioch: closely associated with the  Didache Palestine: because of its Jewish flavor.
Outline I. The Birth and Preparation of Jesus (1:1-4:16). II. Jesus’ Public Ministry in Galilee (4:17-16:20) III. Jesus’ Private Ministry in Galilee (16:21-18:35) IV. Jesus’ Ministry in Judea (19:1-25:46) V. Jesus’ Passion and Resurrection (26:1-28:20)
Purpose and Characteristics Matt doesn’t formally state his purpose. Christian lectionary  Midrash  Manuel of instruction for the church Modified Greco-Roman biography Fundamentally Matthew wrote to preserve what he knew about the life and teachings of Jesus.
Jesus the Fulfillment of God’s intention Fulfillment of OT Prophecy (1:22; 2:15, 17, 23; 4:14-16; 8:17; 12:17; 13:35; 21:4; 26:53-54; 27:9).
Jesus the Savior of Israel and the World Jesus is the fulfillment of Israel itself.  “Jesus Christ the son of David the son of Abraham” (1:1). Jesus completes the divine promise given to Abraham. He is the fulfillment of the Law (5:17). Jesus’ mission is to Israel, and he is to save the people from their sins (1:21).  Emanuel- God with us  He is God’s chosen servant (12:15-21). Gentiles have a place in the kingdom (magi; centurion 8:10; gentiles joining with the patriarchs of old at the great feast 8:11-12; faith of a Canaanite woman 15:21-28; command to Go into all nations (28:18-20).
Jesus the Supreme Authority Note Matthew 28:18. Note the worship that Jesus receives (8:1; 14:33; 28:9, 17).  Utter compassion that Jesus had for people: (9:36; 14:14; 15:32; 20:34). Titles that Jesus uses for himself: Lord of the Sabbath (12:1-8); Son of Man (24:29-31) (82xs in Gospels); Son of God (3:17; 14:33; 16:16; 17:5); Giver of rest to the weary for the world (11:28-30); man of wisdom and miraculous power (13:54).
Jesus the Supreme Authority Authority over: people (4:20,22); paralysis and suffering (8:6,13); over illness and disease (9:22; 14:35,36); over blindness (9:30; over leprosy (8:3); over the wind and the water (8:23-27); over the temple (12:3-6); over sin (9:2)—on deity of Jesus see Mark 2:7; over demons (8:31-32; 15:28); over nature (21:18-19); over history (26:64); over the individual destinies of all human beings (7:21-23; 11:27; 13:40-43); over his own destiny (16:21; 20:17-19; 26:45-46); over his mission on earth (10:1); over space, time, and the future (18:19-20; 28:20).
Jesus the Teacher Jesus is the teacher  (10:24-25; 23:10): he took every opportunity to lead the people into a deeper understanding of God. The world was his classroom: he taught in the farms and villages of Galilee (9:35; 11:1); in Judea and across the Jordan (19:1-3); on the road to Jerusalem (20:17-19); on the Mount of Olives (24:3-25:46); in grainfields (21:23); in hill country (5:1-2); from a boat (13:1-3); on weekdays and the Sabbath (26:55). Matthew ends his Gospel with Jesus’ charge to teach.
Jesus the Prophet Jesus preached as a prophet of Old.  To afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.  The prophetic message caused the people to move with action.  He pronounced judgment on sin and announced the arrival of the Kingdom of God and proclaimed the end of the age and the second coming (24-25).
Jesus the Healer Jesus delivered people from physical and spiritual bondage.  He had power over pain, suffering, disease, sickness, epilepsy, paralysis, demon possession, lameness, blindness, muteness, and crippled limbs.
The Followers of Jesus and the Church. Matthew is the only Gospel that mentions the church by name: Peter’s confession at Caesarea Philippi.  Associated with the keys of the kingdom. Instructions on how to handle church disputes. Jesus as the New Moses giving them the new Law.
Kingdom of Heaven Most important topic in Matthew (53xs) The rule and reign of the sovereign God. God is King Already present in the ministry of Jesus (Matt 4:17; 4:23; 9:35) and made visible through His miracles. Not yet fully realized. (eternal life and resurrection) Ethic of the Kingdom (Matt 5-7) Knowledge of the kingdom is hidden to the common man but made know by God’s grace (Matt 13:11)
Kingdom of Heaven It is to be sought after as one seeks a treasure (Matt 13:44) The Church is the means by which the kingdom advances (Matt 16:19) Entrance in the kingdom is by faith accompanied by humility (Matt 18:3; 19:14) It is difficult to enter the kingdom and those who come in enter violently (Matt 11:12; Lk 16:16) especially for the rich (Matt 19:23). The superficially righteous do not enter the kingdom of Heaven (Matt 21:31) The mission of the kingdom encompasses all nations (Matt 24:14) The Kingdom has existed before the foundation of the world (Matt 25:34).
