The Immediate Future Tense

• 1.
  Objective: To learn howto form and use the near future tense in Spanish. 1
• 2.
  Voy I amgoing V___ _____ are going Va ______ is going ______________ We are going Vais You (pl) ______________ _______________ They ________________ 2
• 3.
   This weekendI am going to go shopping with my friends.  Tonight we are going to play football on the field.  This afternoon Jack is going to play on his PS3. 3

  1. Take thepresent tense of ‘ir’ (to go). Voy – I am going Vas – You (s.) are going Va – He/she/it is going Vamos – We are going Vais – You (pl.) are going Van – They are going 4

  2. Plus ‘a’ 3.Plus the infinitive, for example:  bailar – to dance  cantar – to sing  cocinar – to cook  escuchar – to listen  jugar – to play  vivir – to live  comer – to eat 5 Note that they all end in AR, IR or ER! 

  6  If youlook up a verb (doing word) in the dictionary it will give you the infinitive.  Basic form of the verb before it’s been conjugated.  In Spanish it will either end in AR, IR or ER.  In English it is just a verb with ‘to’ in front of it, for example: to sing, to play, to run, to dance, to eat, to live

   Voy abailar – I am going to dance.  Vas a vivir – You (s.) are going to live.  Va a comer – He/she/it is going to eat.  Vamos a jugar – We are going to play.  Vais a cocinar – You (pl.) are going to cook.  Van a escuchar – They are going to listen. 7

  How do yousay: 1. I am going to sing. 2. He is going to play. 3. Jennifer is going to listen. (*same as ‘she is going’) 4. We are going to eat. 5. You (s.) are going to dance. 6. They are going to live. And some more difficult ones: 1. I am going to eat a hamburger. 2. You (pl.) are going to live in Spain. 3. She is going to listen to music. 8

  1. I amgoing to sing. – Voy a cantar. 2. He is going to play. – Va a jugar. 3. Jennifer is going to listen. – Jennifer va a escuchar. 4. We are going to eat. – Vamos a comer. 5. You (s.) are going to dance. – Vas a bailar. 6. They are going to live. – Van a vivir. And the more difficult ones: 1. I am going to eat a hamburger. – Voy a comer una hamburguesa. 2. You (pl.) are going to live in Spain. – Vais a vivir en España. 3. She is going to listen to music. – Va a escuchar la música. 9
