What is Sound
Sound is a perceived sensation by our ear produced either by living things or
due to the vibration or friction of non-living things and detected by brain.
Types of Sounds in Film/Video

• The sound that both audience and
the characters in the film/video can

• The sound that only the audience
can hear or the Sound that does
not have an onscreen source

story, information, where the
characters interact onscreen.
•Voiceover's are also a form of

build tension, create
romance or very
emotional moments
with musical
instruments.
Sound effects are
special kind of sound
that is used to
enhance the visuals
and keep up the
balance between the
visuals and the

Locked Cut*
One of the most important parts or stages in
a film's production is the locked cut. Locked
refers to the point at which the film's visual
assets have been locked into place, or
which the visuals have been taken from the
offline editing (non-linear) and placed into a
master timeline or online editing platform.

include anything from ambience, such as room tones or
spaceship sounds, over-the-top sound effects, such as car
crashes, explosions, or just about anything else that falls outside
the purview of ambience.
Sound Pre-Mixing
Sound pre mixing is the process of balancing audio levels of all of the sound
tracks in a film/Video from dialogues, to Foleys, and music. A pre mix
engineer will balance all the audio tracks in the movie in order to make
it sound clear, crisp, and clean.
