Scientists placed monkeys in a cage with a ladder to bananas. When a monkey climbed the ladder, the other monkeys were sprayed with cold water, causing them to beat up any monkey that tried to climb the ladder. Even when new monkeys replaced the original ones, they continued this behavior without understanding why, having learned to conform without question.
