Although thorough safety from fire is unachievable, it can be prevented in various ways. Smoke detectors can be very helpful in keeping your family and home safe from unexpected fires. - 20. Safety First Installing SmokeAlarms Installation of smoke alarms is the first step to fire safety. A smoke detector is installed on the ceiling of every room or floor of the house. Whenever there is a fire or smoke in the area surrounding the detector, it starts beeping. If it doesn't stop beeping in the given time, the issue is directed to the local fire brigade. If every home has smoke alarms, fire deaths could drop by around 36%, as per a study. When it comes to smoke alarms, only installation is not enough. One should make sure that the fire alarm company is verified. It is also vital to maintain the alarm system regularly. It may malfunction if not checked upon regularly. There should be at least one smoke alarm on every floor, along with a heat detector in the kitchen. You should install enough alarms to surround all areas where a fire could start. Along with detectors, some also install a sprinkler system. A fire sprinkler system consists of a water supply system. It provides a suitable amount of pressure and flowrate to the piping system. The fire sprinklers are connected to it. Testing the Alarm System After the first step of installing the smoke alarm system is carried out, testing the system comes next. It needs to be tested periodically to help ensure proper functioning. It is absolutely necessary because parts of the smoke detector can wear out over time, like batteries. If your smoke alarms are battery-powered, a monthly test is crucial. If your alarm system is hardwired, it is powered by your home's electric system. They have backup batteries to function during a power cut. Even the hardwired system needs to check upon every month. Start the testing process by alerting your family members. The main switch needs to be turned off so that no alarm is sent to the fire brigade. Smoke detectors depart high- pitched sounds that may frighten children. Post a family member at the furthest point away from the smoke detector. It is essential to make sure that the sound is heard at every point of the house. Press and hold the button on the smoke detector and wait for the sound. A loud sound may emit while you are pressing the button. If the sound is weak, change the batteries. Some battery-operated systems have a built-in device that tweets when batteries get low. It is a signal for replacement. Batteries should be replaced at least twice a year. Make sure that nothing blocks the grates of the smoke detector. Also, check if the other alarms and devices are activated and triggered. Some latest models have features to silence false alarms and destabilize the system for a few minutes. Other Ways to Carry Out Fire Safety Keeping an up-to-date fire safety system is essential. But so is spreading awareness. Fire hazards are dangerous and can be fatal. They should not be taken for granted. Therefore, educating family members about it is important. While testing the fire alarm system, practice escaping the house as well. Institute a family emergency communication plan. Ensure that all family members know who to call when they cannot find one another. Make sure they know of at least two ways to escape from any room they are in. Institute a meeting point outside of your home for everyone to gather. When the house catches fire, the first thing to do is get out. After getting out, stay there and get help. The drill is to GET OUT, STAY OUT AND CALL FOR HELP. STOP, DROP, and ROLL is a method to follow if a person's clothes catch on fire. You must teach this method to your family members, including children. It can lead to serious injuries or even death if the fire reaches important organs of the body. It was a very life- threatening and eye-opening accident. It made me think a lot about the safety of my family and loved ones. And the idea became my passion, and after becoming a postgraduate, I went for the Diploma in Fire Safety. With that diploma, I started this company. During the time of the pandemic, our work-orders came down to 20% due to the lockdown and subsequent restriction, which stopped the movement of people. Our staff, who were mostly from the outside of Bhopal city, did not return, and we had to recruit new people to begin our operations again. But somehow, we managed it. For the staff who remained with us, we provided monthly assistance and all the benefits we could afford. What advice would you like to give to the younger generation of fire and safety enthusiasts? I would like to say to the younger generation of enthusiasts that, like other sectors, this sector also has great potential. Especially the manufacturing of safety equipment and products.
