The Criminals
Criminal #1
Then one of the criminals who
were hanged blasphemed Him,
saying, “If You are the Christ, save
Yourself and us.”
Luke 23:39
What do we hear
in these words?
Criminal #1
Repeating of what others are saying.
Desire to avoid consequences
A hard, angry heart
Blaming others for their
consequences
Criminal #1
Yet another person trying to
direct Jesus’ agenda for their
own benefit
Criminal #2
But the other, answering,
rebuked him, saying, “Do you not
even fear God, seeing you are
under the same condemnation?”
Luke 23:40
Criminal #2
And we indeed justly, for we
receive the due reward of our
deeds, but this Man has done
nothing wrong.”
Luke 23:40
What do we hear
in these words?
Criminal #2

Have you ever been deeply affected
by a statement that was not even
directed at you?
Have you ever been affected by
someone else’s forgiveness?
Criminal #2

Your kingdom.”
Luke 23:40
Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your
tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
Psalm 51:1
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin. For I
acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.
Psalm 51:2-3
For godly sorrow produces
repentance leading to salvation, not
to be regretted; but the sorrow of the
world produces death.
2 Corinthians 7:10
The sacrifices of God are a broken
spirit, a broken and a contrite heart
—These, O God, You will not
despise.
Psalm 51:7
The Response
Criminal #1
Hard-hearted and angry,
demanding that Jesus change
his present circumstances
Criminal #2
Repentant and humble, not
demanding anything, just asking
to be remembered
“Lord,
remember
me when you
come into
your
kingdom”
“If you are
the Christ,
save yourself
and us!”
Both
criminals are
asking Jesus
for
something
but He only
responds to
one.
The Request
Then he said to Jesus, “Lord,
remember me when You come into
Your kingdom.”
Luke 23:42
The Response
And Jesus said to him,

“Assuredly, I say to you, today
you will be with Me in
Paradise.”
Luke 23:43
“Assuredly,
In Greek,
this word is:
“amen”
128x in the
Gospels
I say to you
today
you will be with
me
in Paradise”
“Assuredly,
“You have
heard it said
136x in the
Gospels
I say to you
today
you will be with
me
in Paradise”
but I say to
you…”
“Assuredly,
“You have
heard it said

“Assuredly,
This was
imminent
“Today is
the day of
salvation”
today
you will be with
me
in Paradise”
I say to you
“Assuredly,
Because of
his heart,
Jesus goes
beyond what
is asked
today
you will be
with me
in Paradise”
I say to you
“Assuredly,
Notice:

He does not
say, “I will be
with you”
today
you will be
with me
in Paradise”
I say to you
“Assuredly,
Speaking of
heaven
today
in Paradise”
I say to you
you will be with
me
The reward
for humble
trust in
Christ alone
The Promise
is only as good as the person
who makes it.
A Promise
is not based on your time left,
accomplishments or failures. It is
based on the work of Christ.
The Promise

of the cross
is available to you if you are ready
to surrender your excuses and
self-justification
The Promise

of the cross
The Promise

of the cross
does not come from your
demands, but from your trust
The Promise

of the cross
is yours if you want it
The Promise

of the cross
is in Christ alone
In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For every sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.
No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.
