An analysis of several research studies has found that, in less than 10 years, 75 percent of U.S. adults will be overweight and 41 percent will be obese, helping obesity well on its way to becoming the leading preventable cause of death. According to researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Human Nutrition, the nation's obesity prevalence increased from 13 percent to 32 percent between the 1960s and 2004. The so-called "meta-analysis," a review of a large number of studies, was published online recently, in advance of the 2007 issue of the journal, Epidemiologic Reviews. "Obesity is a public health crisis. If the rate of obesity and overweight continues at this pace, by 2015, 75 percent of adults and nearly 24 percent of U.S. children and adolescents will be overweight or obese," Youfa Wang, lead author of the study, said in an article on FoodNavigatorUSA.com.According to the review, which included a review of 20 journal papers, reports and online data, the prevalence of obesity and overweight has increased at an average rate of 0.3 to 0.8 percentage points across different socio-demographic groups over the past three decades. Some minority and low socio-economic status groups are disproportionately affected by obesity, said the researchers. They included non-Hispanic black women and children, Mexican-American women and children, low socioeconomic status black men and white women and children, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. The meta-analysis found that 66 percent of adults were overweight or obese in 2003-2004. Some 16 percent of children and adolescents were overweight and 34 percent were at risk of becoming overweight in 2003-2004. \n

• #14 This is what the inside of our body looks like if we don’t hydrate well.\n
• #15 The brain works on glucose. Hence, removing carbs from the diet is not\nThe solution. We need sugar to function but we should get it from healthy\nSources of complex carbohydrates. We’ll talk about this more.\nYou will often know if you ate a high GI food as you’ll feel a quick but short\nLasting energy rush/high. A few hours later, you’ll feel slugish and tired. Sometimes\nEven grumpy!\n
• #16 How should we eat? Our blood sugar should stay flowing at a narrow bandwith.\nThe body is an amazing system and functions at optimal levels when\nBlood sugar is flowing like this.\n
• #17 Red line- how high GI foods impact blood sugar levels\nYellow-line- low GI foods keep blood sugar levels stable and don’t result\nIn spikes in your blood sugar.\n
• #18 Here’s how most north-americans start their morning-\nWith a high blood sugar spike (tim horton’s, starbucks muffin and drink).\nHow do you start most of your mornings? With a refined carb?\n
• #19 How do you think they feel about 1-2 hours after breakfast? Their blood sugar\nCrashes and dips below normal. They feel slugish and crave sugar/carbs and\nWill then eat more carbs around 10am- VENDING MACHINE SYNDROME.\n
• #20 The average person spikes their blood sugar 5-10 times per day for\nDecades of their life. Hence, why chronic diseases are rising at epidemic rates.\n
• #21 The glycemic index is a scale that ranks carbohydrate-rich foods by how much they raise blood glucose levels compared to a standard food.\nHere’s a summary of how high glycemic foods (left graph) and\nLow glycemic foods (right graph) affect the body.\n\nSo, you want to reset your system to look like the chart on your right. You want to have a slow release of glucose into your system, so you will feel fuller longer, eat less at your next meal and are more likelyto make healthy food choices. \n
• #22 Are any of these foods in your daily diet? Do you eat any of these\nFoods on a daily basis? DO you start your morning with any of these foods or\nEat any of them after 7pm?\n
• #23 Lower GI Foods: GI of < 55\nRaise your blood glucose slower and lower. \nChoose more often.\nHigher GI Foods\nGI of > 70\nRaise your blood glucose faster and higher.\nChoose less often.\nHere are some examples of low glycemic eating (<55) VS high glycemic eating (>70).\nChoose the all bran VS the cornflakes, the pumpernickely bread VS the white bagel\nOR if you really need to have the white rice, counteract the hi glycemic value here by having some black beans with it, to make it a moderate value. \nFor some, this may not be easy, but start off slowly, make gradual changes and eventually it gets easier. \nMany refined/white carbs spike your blood sugar higher than table sugar would. \n
• #24 Typically you will find it harder to lose weight. You will have intense carb/sugar\nCravings and often nighttime eating. You’ll notice puffiness in your face often\nThe morning after eating high GI foods and although you cannot see them,\nIf we put your cells under a microscope you would see the inflammation at\nThe cellular level.\n
• #25 Have you ever wondered why excess energy gets stored as fat instead of muscle? Well....\nThey can look out into the blood stream and see that there is way too much insulin (and energy) for them to use and they start shutting down their receptor sites. Fat cells are very happy to generate insulin receptor sites – guess where the fat goes?\n
