- Diego Vasicuio was a native priest in Peru in the late 16th/early 17th century who was forced to do hazardous labor by the Spanish. He continued traditional rituals in his 90s and was tried for heresy. 
- Martin Ocelotl was a priest in the Aztec Empire who continued traditional practices after it fell but eventually converted to Catholicism in his 20s, though he still engaged in old ways and was later tried for witchcraft.
- The Spanish Empire extended across much of the Americas and encountered significant resistance from native populations. While some natives converted and assimilated, others fiercely maintained their traditions and identities in the face of Spanish repression. Disease also devastated native populations
