This study examined the effects of listening to music via personal electronics on adolescent reading comprehension. Four students were given reading exams with and without music. The results showed that comprehension scores fell 10-30% when reading with familiar music compared to silence, and music slowed reading pace. Weaker readers seemed most affected by the distracting nature of music during reading. The findings suggest that educators should discourage students from listening to music while reading due to its disruptive effects on comprehension and learning.
