Topic Sentences  Usually the FIRST sentence  Tells the MAIN IDEA Gives the reader information about what they are going to read  Tells your brain what to prepare for!
These are topic sentences…rate them! I love to travel and explore new places.  I like animals. The eagle is the most beautiful bird in the world. Owning a pet can be fun, but very tiring! I ate pizza for dinner. I went to the mall.
What is the topic sentence? I love to travel and explore new places.  This summer, I went to the beach and loved searching the beach for shells.  My family and I also went to the mountains and we went for nature hikes.  Next year, I plan on traveling to the Grand Canyon.  Traveling and exploring is my favorite thing to do over the summer!
What about this paragraph? I like to eat pizza. It is good.  I eat it a lot.

You try… There are three reasons why everyone should go to the York Fair.  First, there are many neat things to see and do.  You can visit the animals and petting zoo.  The food there is great, they have funnel cakes and french fries.  If you like to ride the rides, they have plenty to choose from.  ___________________________________
Things to remember… Think of the MAIN IDEA that you want to tell your reader Make it TO THE POINT Don’t write:  “I want to tell you about” Don’t write:  “Hi, my name is…”
