Summative assessment occurs after instruction and is graded. It provides information about the amount of learning that has occurred. Formative assessments are ongoing and allow for practice and improvement. Summative assessments are formal and provide a means for determining what has been learned. Both formative and summative assessments have benefits and limitations.
