Academic History
In high school I really started to get into more creative subjects. As well as the
necessary GCSEs I chose triple science, computer science, music and sport studies. The
last two allowed me to be much more creative than I could be in other subjects, giving
me freedom to create music or a training routine that was suited specifically to me.
However, I followed the more academic subjects into college, where I took film
studies, biology, and psychology. It was in my film class that I realised that creating
films was what I really enjoyed doing, this was when I knew that I wanted to go into
directing. In this class I began to learn how to use cameras and edit all the footage I
created into a film scene, all of which I enjoyed doing. My skills then were basic, but
it’s all about practice, and I quickly picked up more complex skills. After AS levels I
moved courses onto a creative media vocational course. My subjects were very
difficult to me and I was much more suited to the practical work. The only subject
during the exams I did well in was film, the subject I was actually passionate about.
Current Study
My switch to the creative media course was the best thing that I could have done. In
the first year alone I learnt so many new skills such as animating in different ways and
learning how to use various Adobe products like Photoshop and Audition as well as
improving my skills in Premier. Although I knew I wanted to go into directing films, this
course gave me different options and career paths, and made me realise I could do
jobs that I didn’t even know existed. All these skills have gone towards my different
projects that I’ve done over the course of the year. For example, early in the year I
made a short horror story using just audio (Available here -
https://soundcloud.com/ewan-wild/ghost-story-the-york-massacre). One year ago, I
wouldn’t have had a clue what I was doing and would never have been able to make
this, but I learnt the skill and was able to create some audio that I can be proud of. A
lot of these skills came together for my final project, where I made a film trailer for an
animated film. I created all the drawings myself using Photoshop, a skill I learnt earlier
in the year, and used a camera to take all the photos after printing it out. The editing
was then done on Premier, another key skill for film production. I know I can still
develop my skills, but they have definitely improved massively over the course of the
year, and I am ready for them to improve even more.
The Future
In the future, I want to go into directing, preferably in film. University is a key part in
that as it will teach me so much about how to direct, as well as making my practical
skills as good as they can be. University may also make me fall in love with another
section of film. When I am there I might end up being a big fan of producing work, and
so I’d end up doing that instead. A big part of university for me is experiencing every
different area in film, and I am looking forward to trying new areas that I didn’t know I
could do. It is also a place where I can find my own style. I want to do work that’s
mine, and people know it’s mine, and university is the best place to do this.
Outside College
Outside of college I enjoy various different activities. I like playing basketball and I am
currently part of the college team. This is actually very useful in relation to film as in
basketball, working as a team is key, if you can’t do that then you’ve lost. In film you
also have to work as a team, the actors, director, cameramen and everyone else has to
act as a team to create a piece of art that could be watched by potentially millions of
people. I also enjoy watching films in my past time, this is very important as I believe
that it is important to enjoy what you do, and if I’m watching films in my past time, it is
clear that I enjoy what I do. I also currently have a part time job as an assistant to the
owner of a headphone company. I do all the more menial tasks such as testing and
packaging the headphones, as well as various other smaller jobs. I think that this job
has made me much more patient as I’d be doing the same job for hours on end,
potentially testing and packaging over one hundred different pairs in an afternoon. I
understand that sometimes in film you have to be patient, one scene could take days
to shoot, so this job has been useful in teaching me patience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is very important to me that I constantly improve myself in every way I
can because I don’t just want to go into directing, I want to be the best at it. I am
dedicated to what I want to do and determined to do it well, as well as improve my
skills as much as I can.
Introduction
For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed films. When I was nine I would
make Lego stop motion animations with my friends, or go out to the woods near us
and make a zombie movie. It was only when I got to college did I truly realise I could
actually study them, my first year consisting of ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Bonny and Clyde’.
The subject gave meaning to every shot in every movie, which just made me enjoy it
more. I never knew there could be such meaning behind the positioning of a camera.
Through this I have been able to improve my work, and after my final project is over I
will continue improving and making short films. I look back at the films I did when I
was younger and realise how much my skills have developed over a short amount of
time, and hopefully will continue to.

  • 23. Introduction For as long as I can remember, I have always enjoyed films. When I was nine I would make Lego stop motion animations with my friends, or go out to the woods near us and make a zombie movie. It was only when I got to college did I truly realise I could actually study them, my first year consisting of ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Bonny and Clyde’. The subject gave meaning to every shot in every movie, which just made me enjoy it more. I never knew there could be such meaning behind the positioning of a camera. Through this I have been able to improve my work, and after my final project is over I will continue improving and making short films. I look back at the films I did when I was younger and realise how much my skills have developed over a short amount of time, and hopefully will continue to.
