What is a QEP?Quality Enhancement PlanA core requirement for SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation: “. . . a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning”(SACS Handbook for Reaffirmation of Accreditation, 2007, p. 3).
What is our QEP?Why are we here today?Multimodal Communication Across the Curriculum (MCXC)To tell you what it is and to generate “buzz”
Why MCXC?1)  It’s what employers want.  Association of American Colleges and Universities (Hart, 2007)
2)  2009 Follow-up . . .“[Only] one in four employers thinks . . . colleges are doing a good job” (p. 2).89% said colleges should place greater emphasis on developing students’“ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing” (p. 9).  81%: critical & analytical reasoning skills

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Purpose is to show that all of us are responsible for Student Success. My goal is not to exclude, difficult to get more circles on the page. IT, CELT, Libraries, IRPE, etc… – implied that they support ALL missions..
  • #4 Right now, 2010 is 82.9%2009 2nd year is 72.7%
  • #5 Richard, this slide shows that our students with ACT < 22, on average are much less successful than the rest of the cohort. But, it also shows that the efforts of the past 4 years have raised first year success for the bottom quartile by 5 – 10%.
  • #7 We have discussed this more than once. I have been actively looking for space possibilities. The time is now for us to develop the proposal, to bring the services together that will enhance efficiency and provide one-stop, or at least fewer stop shopping for our students. Appoint committee to put this together. Due this semester.

Other universities have offered oral comm across the curriculum, writing across the curriculum, and even speaking and writing across the curriculum….none have yet created multi-modal communication (oral, written, visual) across flat print/static, face-to-face (interpersonal, teams, public speaking), and digital/online environments.
  • #18 How will we do this? Develop infrastructure for support in two ways: Faculty development and Student tutoring
