Working Principle of Ultrasonic Flow Meter
Industrial Ultrasonic Flow Meters work mainly on two principles:
• One works on the Transit Time or Time of Flight principle
• The second one works on the Doppler Effect principle.

Transit Time Principle of Ultrasonic Flow Meter
• The transit time meter is used for clear liquids or liquids
having very low levels of undissolved solids.
• When the ultrasound waves pass through the liquid, the
component of liquid velocity is added to ultrasound
velocity.
• By careful measurement of the Time required by the
sound wave to reach the other end of the diameter, one
can calculate accurately the liquid velocity.
• By knowing the velocity, the volumetric flow rate can be
calculated.

Doppler Principle of Ultrasonic Flow Meter
• Doppler meter is suitable for liquids having a
high level of undissolved solid
contaminations.
• When the sound wave gets reflected from
any particle in the flow its frequency
changes and observing the change in
frequency the velocity of the particle can be
calculated and in turn the volumetric flow.

There are two types of transit time based Ultrasonic flow meter
• Clamp-on Type Ultrasonic Flow Meter
• Insertion Type Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Clamp-On Type Ultrasonic Flow Meter
• The Flowmeter unit utilizes two transducers
that function as both ultrasonic transmitters
and receivers.
• The transducers are clamped onto the outside
surface of the closed pipes.
• The transit time flow meter measures the time
taken by an ultrasonic signal transmitted from
one transducer to cross the pipe and be
received by second transducer.
• The flow is then measured by comparing the
upstream and downstream time of Ultrasonic
signal.

Insertion Type Ultrasonic Flow Meter
• It utilizes two transducers that function as both Ultrasonic
transmitter and receiver.
• The transducer is inserted in the surface of the closed
pipes.
• The transit time flow meter measures the time taken for an
ultrasonic signal transmitted from one transducer to cross
the pipe and be received by second transducer.
• The flow is then measured by comparing the upstream and
downstream time of Ultrasonic signal.
• With no flow through the pipe the transit time would be
equal in both directions.
