INTRODUCTION
 Health or illness, basically takes birth in the structural & functional
unit of a community i.e. FAMILY
 COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING is such a discipline which operates
with in the realms of community & thereby helps in meeting the health
& nursing needs of community.
 COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING plays a very challenging role in
promoting & protecting health of people.
 COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING primarily focuses on health
promotion & specific protection therefore preventing the disease at its
primary level.
DEFINITIONS OF
 COMMUNITY:
Community in its broader way consist of population
with several group of people in a defined geographic area , representing
various religions, values, customs, beliefs, interest & practises.
Group of people consist of male & female, rich & poor ,
children & adult, sick & healthy, productive & un-productive.
 COMMUNITY HEALTH:
It is defined as a community organized effort for
maintaining, protecting & improving the health of the community
people.
OR
According to WHO(1971):
Community health refers to health status of the
members of a community, to the problem(s)affecting their health, to
the totality of the health care provided for the community.
COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSUNG:
It is defined as a branch of nursing practice for
which there exist a body of knowledge & related skills which is applied
in meeting in the health need of individual, family & community in
there normal environment such as home, school & work place.
PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of community health nursing has 3 component,
they are:
• Logical thinking.
• Code of ethics.
• Beliefs of profession.
The common philosophy of CHN are as follows:
1. Philosophy of individuals right of being healthy.
2. Philosophy of socialism.
3. Philosophy of working together under a competent leader for the
common good.
4. CHN not only cares for community but also cares for individual &
family.
5. CHN focuses on preventive care & measures for promotion of
health.
6. CHN supports MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES.
The aims & objectives of CHN are listed as under:
 To increase capability of individual, family, community to deal
with their own health & nursing problem
 To strengthen community resources.
 To control & counteract environment.
 To prevent & control communicable or non-communicable
diseases.
 To provide specialized services for special groups like mothers,
under five children, eligible couple.
 To reduce disability rates by proper rehabilitation services.
 To improve & maintain the nutritional status of community .
 To conduct research & contribute to the further refinement &
improvement of CHN practise.
 To supervise guide & help health personnel in carrying out functions
effectively.
 To reduce the mortality & morbidity rates.
 To increase the life expectancy.
 To provide health care services adequately.
 To make health policies on the need of community
people.
 To do community diagnosis.
 To improve & maintain social & mental health of
community.
PRINCIPLES.
The principles of community health nursing are as follows:
 CHN is community focussed, it is essential to know the defined
community.
 Health education, guidance & supervision are integral part of CHN.
 Health services should be realistic in terms of available resources.
 Health services should be directed towards family.
 Effective health worker irrespective of position or place of work
functions as a team.
 Health services should be given on the basis of fundamental
principle “equity.”
 Health education should be planned based on the suitable
condition like date, time,& place.
 Health team should function in co-ordination & co-operation
with each other.
 Health worker should be non-political, non-sectarian in
relationship.
 Health worker must maintain professional dignity & must not
accept any gift or bribe.
 Community involvement is integral part of CHN practise.
SCOPE.
The scope of community health nursing is very wide & is
described as follows.
 Home care.
 Nursing homes.
 MCH & Family planning.
 School health nursing.
 Industrial nursing services.
 Domiciliary nursing services
 Mental health nursing services
 Rehabilitation centers
 Geriatric nursing services
The scope of CHN also encompasses
 The goals & aims of community health services.

 The focus & practise level.
CONCEPT.
A conceptual frame work/ model is a meaningful
configuration of a set of related concepts which is helpful
in describing & defining a particular thing & determining
specific related practices.
Conceptual framework are usually developed on the basis
of either theories or assumptions & beliefs pertaining to
the subject concerned .
