1.1 What are living things?
 Nutrition:
 Heterotrophic nutrition. Organisms which obtain their food from organic
substances (for instance, human beings undergo this kind of nutrition). Animals
obtain their food from other living things.
 Autotrophic nutrition. Organisms which obtain their “food” from inorganic
substances (for instance, plants perform this kind of nutrition).

 Growth
 Excretion
 Reproduction
Pellet, from an owl
1.2 Matter in living things
 Inorganic substances
- Water and mineral salts
 Organic substances
 Protein
 Lipids
 Carbohydrates
1.3 A good place to live
In order to survive, living things need:
 Liquid water
 Oxygen
 Light and carbon dioxide
 Mineral salts
 A suitable climate
1.3 A good place to live
1.3 A good place to live
1.3 A good place to live
1.3 A good place to live
The Solar system
1.4 Conditions necessary for survival
The conditions that occur in a particular place are called
environmental factors. They include:
• Biotic factors. Organisms are dependent on the presence
of other living things within a habitat.
• Abiotic factors. These are chemical and physical factors,
such as light, temperature, humidity and water salinity.
1.4 Conditions necessary for survival
What factors do you recognize in this little ecosystem?
1.5 Two types of environment
The aquatic environment
- seas, oceans, rivers, ponds and lakes.
- three quarters of the Earth is covered by water
1.5 Two types of environment
Some characteristics
- Abundance of water
- Very little changes
- Filter for light
- Small amounts of air
Remember; about 150 meters
below the surface there is total
darkness, therefore, plant life is
limited.
1.5 Two types of environment
The terrestrial environment
Home to organisms that don’t stay permanently in the water
- Lack of water
- Highly variable conditions. Fluctuations.
A desert (don’t mistake
for dessert)
