Getting a Domain Name
• All computers on the internet get an
IP address but not a domain name –
you have to pay for that!
• You pay the “domain registrar” who
is allowed to sell domain names by
the organisation that runs that TLD
• Different costs based on popularity
of name and TLD

Who looks after the server?
• First of all, it’s not really a special
computer other than the software
it’s running
• But most normal people don’t keep
them at home!
• Why not?

Web Hosting
• This is when you pay a company to look
after the web server that your website
‘lives on’
• Research: find 3 different companies
that provide web hosting (UK
based, please!)
• Compare the services they offer
• Store this information in a table – you’ll
need it later today for the assignment!

Assignments
• A lot of assignments but most are
relatively small
• We need to move fast to cover all of this
unit before Easter!
• Keep to the schedule, don’t get behind
on this unit!
• Most of the work should be completed
in lessons – if you work properly!

Assignment 1
The purpose of this assignment is to:
give students the opportunity to show
a knowledge of the basic features of
web architecture
Assessing: P1
outline the web architecture and
components which enable internet and
web functionality

Scenario
You work as a trainee for
YellowZebra, a new Web Design
company based in South Birmingham. They
specialise in online marketing consultancy and in
designing, implementing and hosting e-commerce
websites for small to medium sized local
businesses.
Your manager has asked you to create some
information to show prospective
clients, presented as Powerpoint
slideshows, leaflets and reports. You have also
been asked to design and create a website to
show your creativity and technical skills.

Tasks (There are 2 for P1!)
Before a client website can ‘go live’ it will need
both a domain name and to be hosted. Create a
presentation to show new clients:
• Explain the purpose of a hosting service and the
typical functions provided.
• Look at three different website hosting
companies and identify the services each offers.
• Using a domain diagram, explain the structure
of a domain name.
• Explain the role of a domain name registrar and
find out the registrar of a chosen domain name.

Presentations should be ready to
present and may include speaker notes
and timed transitions.


Task 2
In response to customer
feedback after introduction
meetings, it has been found

explaining. Add extra slides
to the end of your
presentation to explain the

Deadline (& Homework!)
• I expect this to be handed in to me
before the beginning of my next
lesson with you – next Thursday
• Email your work to me – make sure
it’s finished and perfect so you don’t
have to re-do and waste time that
should be spent on other work!
