Word-for-word, idioms don't make sense. • But by looking at the idiom as a chunk of language, it is often possible to guess its meaning from the context. • The words and word order of an idiom are fixed, meaning that you cannot usually change the order or replace one of the words with a synonym. • Examples include • 'tie the knot' = get married or 'bundle of joy' = a baby.

- 22. Dear Sofia, I can'tbelieve another year has flown by! I thought I'd write and let you know what were all been up to. The most exciting event was my brother Simon's wedding in August. It was a traditional wedding in the English countryside - and with English weather, unfortunately. Dark clouds and drizzle all day, but we did manage to get all the photos taken outdoors, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Rebecca also invited mum and yours truly to her hen do a couple of weeks before the big day, which was a Spa and pampering weekend. It was lush! It's been an eventful year for me too. So far, the second year at uni has been considerably tougher than the first. I've had so much coursework that I had to pull a few all-nighters. I even considered bowing out of the hockey team because of all the pressure, but friend's persuaded me to keep at it, and I'm glad they did, because it does give me a welcome break from the library!
- 23. I decided totake up the opportunity of a year's work placement before my Final year. It was hard to find one, though. Placement’s got Snapped up really quickly, and for a while I thought I wouldn’t find anything. Thankfully, my cousin Rob helped me get an internship at the bank where he works in Dubai. It ticks all the boxes - a big company, an exciting city, decent pay, so I'm hoping it'll pan out well. I'm hoping to get to France in the New Year, so I can catch up with my sister and her family there. She had another baby in June - a boy this time, Paul. They all came over for the wedding of course, but they couldn't stay long because Duncan had to get back to work. Hannah's in her element. Kirstin is enjoying having a little brother to play with. They're really settled in Marseilles now - they love the city and I can't see them ever moving back. I'm also planning to pop in on my nan and granddad over the holiday. Nan's not in the best of health and looking after her is taking its toll on granddad. He still hangs on to his classic car, although he does find driving a lot more stressful than he used to Anyway, I think that's all from me.
