UNIT Planning
• A unit consists of many lessons & a lesson consists of
many topics.
• It consists of both subject matter & method.
• A unit is an outline of carefully selected subject matter
which has been isolated because of its relationship to
pupils “needs & interests” – Samford.
•A unit consists of well organised subject matter
appropriate learning experiences & methods
with enough provision for evaluation & follow up
activities.
•Characteristics of a Unit:
must be flexible (to meet the needs of individual
difference)
 should contain subject matter
subject matter must be segmented and arranged
 should contain the interrelated content
 Proper Evaluation and follow up activities.
Factors of Unit Planning:
Content
analysis
Objective &
specifications
Teaching
Learning
activities
Teaching
Learning
resources
Evaluation
Tools
Content Analysis
refers actual subject matter
Segmented based on the object of teaching
Content should be arranged in a sequential
Manner
Objective & specifications
Objectives are the
expected behavioural
changes of the
students.
The entire unit should
have arrangement of
the content based on
the objectives.
Teaching & learning activities
appropriate methods
for appropriate
content .
Eg.
writing the program
can be taught by
using demo.
Teaching & learning resources
 Materials for practical activity must be
planned in order to ensure their
availability at the time needed.
Evaluation Tools
 Proper Evaluation techniques must be
included throughout the study of the
unit as a continuous process.
Preparation of Unit plan
Preparation / Motivation
Knowing the previous
experience

Review and Drill
Evaluation
Preparation of Unit plan
•Preparation / Motivation
• the pupil establish the purpose and are
motivated to achieve it.
• The motivation should not be forced from
outside.
• Knowing the previous experience
– It is essential to know about the
background of the students. So there is no
duplication.
•Presentation
• Giving some new experiences.
• Give some methods to have direct
experience.
• Organization of Learning
– The students should get opportunities to
bring their learning together.
• Summarization
• Review and Drill
• Evaluation

Uses of Unit Plan
• Makes the student work better
• useful to the teachers to identify the general obj.
specification
• gives overall views of the subject matter
• provides a basic course structure
• provides an opportunity to the teacher to keep
balance b/w various dimensions of the course.
• enables the teacher to break away from traditional
textbook teaching
Disadvantages
• It requires efficient, hard working &
trained teachers.
• if the sub units are not properly arranged
the students may get confused
• It needs systematic preparation
STRUCTURE OF A FOUR FOLD LESSON PLAN
Content
Specification of Behavioural
Outcomes
Learning Experiences
Evaluation
Content
•The teacher elicit the content to be
taught to the students in the classroom .
•The students develop the
•skills in terms of cognitive,
affective and psychomotor domain
after attending the teaching
session of this content.
Specification of Behavioural Outcomes
• It helps us to state the instructional objectives of various school
subjects.
• They should be specific and must be expressed in behaviors terms.
• General objectives often do not offer an adequate enough direction to
the teacher.
• As a result, he cannot prepare and organize appropriate learning
activities for his pupils.
• Hence there is a need for specifications.
• The statement of a specification contains an action verb.
• The statement of specification should be in the form of the students
achievement and not in the form of the teachers intentions.
Learning Experiences
• Learning Experiences results from the active participation of
students in the stimulus situation which the teacher provides in
the classroom.
• It is the interaction of the learner and the situation provided by
the teacher.
• It should be
• Purposeful, continuous
• interactive based on facts, concepts, principles,
• generalization for making learning experience more functional and
• effective in teaching learning process.
