MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk about and explore mental health in multiple ways. In just a few words,
please share: How have you experienced the concept of "mental health" within your own cultural communities?
● In my country, Ethiopia, mental health is seen as a joke
● Open, but more of and "us" v. "them" approach.
● Spanish community is not perceived as something real
● Mental health is not a thing. You better pray. You're not really stressed, you're just a child, what can you
be stressed about?
● Student community
● Its seen as an excuse to not succeed
● Don't talk about it
● something deviant
● In my country (Venezuela) it seems like people with mental illnesses are weak, or lazy, or its not "as bad as
what your relatives have been through"
● It is not considered an illness. People make fun of it. Very Sad.
● evil possessed
● Not talked about
● It is ridiculed and avoided in Zimbabwean culture
● "You need to get over it" "you're just sad" "depression is not real" "weakminded
● "Get over it" is what I often hear in my Hispanic community
● LGBTQA Not discussed, but most people usually have a history of it
● As African American, its highly suppressed. We place more value on having materials thinfs
● My experience in my pakistani community is seen as a western concept and is a taboo to talk about it
● in Guyana, you are seen as crazy or wanting attention
● A punishment from God
● In my Dominican culture, at least my sphere of influence, it is "mocked," or no acknowledge as a reality.
● The sign of “the devil” in a person in my country
● in the philippines, mental health is not as prioritized as physical health; and it is often advised to hide it
to maintain the reputation of your family
● Lack of recognition/ acknowledgement,
● Overly normalized, we all have in mentality in the LGBT community
● accepted (mainly bc many people within my family experience)
● You’re dramatic, its not serious, just deal with it”
