The sheer number and variety of social media tools makes it feel like a confusing mess… and it changes every day.
You probably have some experts in your house who know how to click the buttons. But do they know how to apply the business principles to your association?
Networking vs Social Networking Networking is building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships by sharing information, ideas & resources. Social Networking is networking using social media as a tool.
Social Media vs Social Networking Social Media are the tools you use on line such as Facebook, TweetDeck and Ping.fm Social Networking is what you do with the tools
Therefore, using the principles of a good face to face networking strategy will work for you when using social media tools. Make sure you and your members have a good foundation by understanding these principles of networking. You’ll spend a lot more time talking and engaging with your members.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Anyone else feel like this confusing mess just sums it all up?? Yes, me too so I had a nice long consultation with some great experts on the topic …
  • #4: Here’s my expert panel.
  • #5: Therefore: Using Social Media means that you are still NETWORKING, you’re just using a different forum. None of you need a lesson on how to network, but I want to give you a very simple networking strategy that you’ve probably never heard before. It’s very very simple, so that you can REMEMBER it. It’s not a huge list of tips. Just five parts to a regular plan that works for face to face business networking AND social networking.

  • #7: I’m just going to give you this very quickly. Social NETWORKING success depends on your overall understanding of Networking, whether it’s online or in person. The same principles and activities apply. We’ll talk about each one as it relates to Social Media, OK? If all you do is remember to do SOMETHING that fits into one of these parts, you’ll start to put together an effective networking plan PLUS you’ll always know what do do next.

  • #16: Extremely annoying when people send me friend requests and I have NO idea who they are. I suspect many of them just want to sell me something.
