As technological innovations increase,
supervisors are using technologies in
traditional and online supervision. This
presentation will focus on technology-assisted
supervision topics, including current uses of
technology, ethical and legal issues, integrating
technology in a purposeful way, concerns and
joys of using technology, and supervisor and
supervisee experiences. Particular attention
will be placed on discussing the supervision
relationship and working alliance.
What are your experiences using
technology and clinical supervision?
A Few Points
 Supervision drives the technology, the technology
does not drive the supervision process and
relationship
 Ineffective supervision can happen without the use
of technology
 Technology use is on a continuum, with some
supervisors conducting supervision entirely online,
some using a hybrid model, and others meeting
entirely face-to-face
Supervision Working
Alliance
In your experience, how does technology
affect the supervision working alliance?
Supervision Working
Alliance
 Supervisees view online supervision favorably
(Vaccaro & Lambie, 2007)
 The supervisory working alliance and collaboration
can be maintained in videoconference (Reese et al.,
2009)
 Establish the relationship with professional, clear
communication – not harsh
 Using combination of synchronous and
asynchronous communication methods work best
Technologies Used in
Clinical Supervision
 Email
 Cell phones
 Remote live supervision
 Cloud based file sharing
 Virtual worlds
 Video conferencing
 What other technologies have you used?
Joys and Concerns
 Technology can enhance supervision
 increase communication
 Connect supervisees and expert supervisors
 Can help provide counseling in rural areas
 When technology works it is great, when it
doesn’t…
 Do I really know my supervisee if we never
meet in person?
What are your primary
concerns regarding ethical
issues and technology in
clinical supervision?
HIPAA and HITECH
 Security
 Business Associate Agreements
 Case notes
 Audio and video tapes
 Other thoughts?
Steps to Adding
Technology (Slowly!)
1. Focus on the supervision process
2. Think about technology
3. Choose a new technology
Steps to Adding
Technology
4. Learn the technology
5. Prepare a backup plan

Editor's Notes

  • #8 Since supervisees tend to use technology for personal communication – ie FB text messaging, model the behavior you would want
  • #12 Don’t use a company that will not sign a BAA Case notes can be kept separtely - nothing specific in HIPAA on case notes Tapes should be traveled by lock box
  • #13 Process: think about the goals of supervision and the types of supervision Think about technology – what types do you use? Supervisee? What types do you avoid? What types of computerss, internet connectin, accessability software? Based on the objectives/goals and what you/supervisee have – choose a technology
  • #15 Seems simple and obvious, but many times people choose to use a technology (like a blog or wiki) when they haven’t used it yet. Take time to experiment with the technology, have fun – it can be fun to use technology sometimes we let our technology reluctance to get in the way
