What do you think of when we talk
about “technology in business”?
Technology vital for businesses
• Technology now common place
• But there is still a big difference between businesses who see
technology as a necessity verses those who see it as a tool to
improve their business
The previous age
• Users sat at desks using a PC and laptop
• Servers, printers, digital ISDN phone system, all in house
• Microsoft Windows XP (no support since April 2014)
• Microsoft Server 2003 (support ends July 2014)
• Operating System Statistics:
Windows 7: 58%
Windows 8: 14%
Windows XP: 17%
The modern age
• Users working remotely using a tablet and mobile
• Cloud, hosted and mobile systems and services
• PC sales continue to fall
• Tablet sales continue to grow
• More companies launching cloud based products and services
Cloud Services
How can businesses benefit?
• Cloud services levelling the playing field for SMBs
• Access to latest applications and services without large capital investment
• Reduced spending through scalable pricing
• Cut infrastructure and support costs
• Ability to stay productivity, even when away from the office
• Reduced data loss risk
• Increased business continuity
What are the risks?
• Users still the biggest risk to your IT systems
• Viruses and malware
• Data loss
• Bypassing the IT policy
• Multiple layers of security a necessity
• Business continuity – Do you have a plan?
Examples

invoicing
• Moved from ISDN phone system to VOIP system – Saving of approximately £1000
per month on phone bills
• Client 2:
• Moved from manual, paper based system to bespoke cloud application – Increased
productivity, faster invoicing, quicker job completion
• Client 3:
• Full business continuity system – Now have complete peace of mind
What does the future hold?
• More services available in the cloud
• Closer connection between small business and technology
• Mobile workforce – go officeless

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Cloud services Backup Data Software Hardware Now covers more things like CCTV, Telephones, Apps
  • #4 Have some example of some of our clients coming up
  • #5 So this is a typical example of how businesses have been, or maybe still are working. Maybe users can only get access to files and/or emails whilst in the office. Hopefully there aren’t many of you still using Windows XP or Server 2003?
  • #6 This is the direction that things are heading.
  • #7 Cloud services can be a very broad term. Here is an example of just some of the services available. Fear of the term “cloud”. The concept has been around for a very long time – Hotmail, AOL mail etc. More and more are appearing everyday. Traditional software companies such as Sage are being pressured into having a cloud based service due to consumer demand and competition from startups adopting the cloud based model such as Xero. You can now find a cloud based service for anything. Security services, accounting, telephony, email, file storage etc.
  • #9 Users will find their own way to increase productivity whilst bypassing the IT policy – dropbox, onedrive This poses a risk to the security of your data – lose control of distribution Security – email, virus protection, gateway security, access rights, modern, up to date operating systems Business Continuity – What would you do if you lost your systems or office? How much downtime could you cope with?
  • #11 Small businesses need to continue to embrace the latest technology to compete
