Valentine's Day is celebrated annually on February 14th to honor Saint Valentine. According to legend, Saint Valentine lived in Rome in the 3rd century and performed secret weddings for young lovers, despite the Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage. Valentine was imprisoned and sentenced to death for defying the emperor, developing a friendship with the jailer's daughter before his execution. On February 14th, the day of his death, he signed a farewell note to his friend "from your Valentine," which is why the day became associated with expressing affection. Now on Valentine's Day, people traditionally exchange cards, flowers, or gifts with loved ones.
