INDIGENOUS DRUGS
INTRODUCTION:
●Indigenous drugs ( Ethno medicine) refer to pharmacologically active principles
primarily obtained from the medicinal plants with proven therapeutic value.
●A large number of medicinal plants have been recognized to possess therapeutic
value in the treatment of a variety of diseases.
●The medicinal plants contain pharmacologically active principles such as alkaloids,
glycosides, resins, tannins, fixed oils, volatile oils etc.
INDIGENOUS ANTIBACTERIAL/ANTISEPTIC AGENTS
●Curcuma longa (Turmeric) बेसार
● Azadirachta indica (Neem) नीम
● Allium sativum (Lasun) (लसुन)
● Ocimum sanctum(Tulsi) 'तुलसी'
● Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) - अदुवा
•Curcuma longa (Turmeric) बेसार :It contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin,
which is often used to color foods and cosmetics.
INDIGENOUS ANTIBACTERIAL/ANTISEPTIC AGENTS
Turmeric is commonly used for conditions
involving pain and inflammation, such
as osteoarthritis. It is also used for hay
fever, depression, high cholesterol, a type
of liver disease, and itching.
•Azadirachta indica-Neem (नीम)
Neem leaves to cure skin diseases such as boils, ulcers, eczema, and
ring worm. Pastes and extracts from Neem trees have also proven
effective in treating various skin fungus conditions, including athlete's
foot and lesions in the mouth and vagina.
Neem oil Cure dermatitis, maggot wound
•Allium sativum (लसुन)
Being an antiseptic and anti-
dermatophytic, it is used in different
skin diseases.
•Ocimum sanctum(Tulsi) 'तुलसी'
For the treatment of bronchitis, malaria, diarrhea,
dysentery, skin disease, arthritis, eye diseases, insect bites
and so on.
Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) and Turmeric
(Curcuma longa) for Bacterial Infection
Treatment
•Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) - अदुवा
The antioxidants in ginger can be used to
help preserve skin's collagen, making it an
all-natural ingredient for anti-aging
routines.
After Ginger bath
Dermatophytosis
INDIGENOUS ANTIFUNGAL AGENTS
●Curcuma longa (Turmeric) बेसार
● Pongamia glabra (Karanj) करंज
● Azadirachta indica-Neem (नीम)
● Cassia alata((दादमुददन)
●Curcuma longa (Turmeric) बेसार
●Using turmeric for yeast infections seems to be an
excellent natural remedy.
●Many studies have demonstrated the antifungal
activity of curcumin on Candida strains and various
other types of fungi.
Candida albican infection
● Pongamia glabra (Karanj) करंज
●The root, bark, leaves, flower and seeds of Pongamia pinnata
(L.) Pierre possesses medicinal properties and used as medicine.
●In Ayurveda and Unani, the plant is used for anti-inflammatory,
antiplasmodial, anti-nonciceptive, antihyperglycamic, anti-
lipidperoxidative, antidiarrhoeal, anti-ulcer, anti-hyperammonic
and antioxidant activity (Chopade et al., 2008).
● The antifungal activity of the plant extracts was found mainly
against the Candida albicans, Epidermophyton floccosum.
Candida albicans infection
•● Azadirachta indica-Neem (नीम)
●Neem has demonstrated antifungal activity and is very
successful against fungi.
●The genus Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton are
an important source of dermatophytic infections in several parts
of the body.
●Both the neem leaves and seed oil extracts were capable of
inhibit the growth of T. mentagrophytes, T. rubrum, E.
floccosum and M. canis.
Microsporum canis is typically transmitted from dogs or cats ...
● Cassia alata (दादमुददन)
● Leaves are used in skin diseases particularly in ring worm.
Root is dried and powdered with Terminalia chebula in equal
ratio and this mixture is also used to cure ring worm.
●It is also used to cure venereal diseases such as syphilis and
gonorrhea
INDIGENOUS ANTHELMINTIC
●Areca catechu(Nut) सुपारी
●Azardirachta indica (Neem) नीम
●Carica papaya (Papita) पपीता
●Punica grantum (अनार)
●Azardirachta indica (Neem) नीम
●In sheep, neem water extracts was 53.72% effective
against Haemonchus contortus [Rob et al.,2004].
Haemonchu worm Haemonchu egg
Anaemia due to Haemonchu
●Carica papaya (Papita) पपीता
●Okeniyi et al., (2007) who reported 71 - 100% worm clearance in
asymptomatic children administered with C. papaya seeds and honey.
●Carica papaya seeds contain many biologically active compounds
mainly parpain and benzylisothiocyanate (Nwofia et al., 2012).
●The Infusa of papaya (Carica papaya L.) Seed has anthelmintic effect
against Ascaris suum in vitro (Maulidila Briliana Agarti et al.,2017).
●Punica grantum (अनार)
●Punica granatum (anar) is another herbal anthelmintic drug widely used
in ayurveda. The most famous usage worldwide has been a vermifugal or
taenicidal agent i.e. a killer and expeller of intestinal worms (Subhedar et
al. 2011). The anthelmintic activity may be chiefly due to alkaloids.
● It is likely that at higher concentration all binding receptors on the
worms were occupied thus leading to hyperpolarization of membranes,
limiting excitation and impulse transmission causing flaccid paralysis of
worm muscle, a similar observation made by Wasswa and Olila (2006).
●P. granatum exhibited significant in vitro anthelmintic activity
against G. indicus of sheep and have potential for use as an
alternative anthelmintic agent for the control of gastrointestinal
helminths of sheep and other ruminants.
●Areca catechu ( Betel nut) सुपारी
●Betel nut has showed better results and an in vivo
anthelmintic effect at 30 gm/20 kg body weight against
roundworms and tapeworms of small ruminants and
native chickens (Peng et al. 2015).
● Arecholine, active ingredient found in betel nut, inhibits
the gamma amino benzoic acid that causes paralysis of
the helminths [Orazaga et al., 2017].
