VISUAL EFFECTS ( VFX )
Visual effects are the various processes by which imagery is
created and/or manipulated outside the context of a live
action shot.
Visual effects involve the integration of live-action footage
and generated imagery to create environments which look
realistic which is impossible to capture on film.
Visual effects can be categorize into : Compositing, Matte
Painting, Animation, Lighting, Texture, Rigging
COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGERY
 It is the application of computer graphics to create images
in art, printed media, video games, films, television
programs, commercials, and simulators.
 The visual scenes may be dynamic or static, and may be two-
dimensional (2D), though the term "CGI" is most commonly used to
refer to 3D computer graphics used for creating scenes or special
effects in films and television.
 Computer graphics software is used to make computer-generated
imagery for films, professional-grade films, games, and fine art from
their home computers.
EXAMPLE
 It is the combining of visual elements from separate sources into
single image, often to create the illusion that all those elements are
parts of the same scene.
 Compositing is taking real-life elements with Computer Generated
(CG) Element and putting them together - so they seem like they were
shot together.
 Live-action shooting for compositing is variously called Chroma key",
"blue screen", "green screen" and other names.
COMPOSITING
EXAMPLE
CHROMA KEYING
 Chroma keying is a technique used for combining two frames or images
by replacing a color.
 It is often used in film industry to replace a scene's background by
using a blue or green screen as the initial background and placing the
actor in the foreground.
 Chroma key is also known as color keying and color separation overlay;
it is also commonly called blue screen or green screen.
EXAMPLE
WHY USE ONLY GREEN AND BLUE COLOR
 Key tool works with other colors, but blue and green work the best
because the digital images use Red, Green and Blue channels to make
up the image. Red is not very good because actors skin tones often have
a lot of red.
 In the compositing software(such as Adobe After Effects, The Foundry
Nuke and many others), there is a tool call “key”. What this does is tells
the computer all the pixel that is this kind of green or blue should be
treated as transparent.
 The keying tool will find all the pixels that is the same kind of green and
then treat those pixels as transparent.
EXAMPLE
MOTION TRACKING
 When you import a file to after effects, your computer has no idea
what is going on in the footage, it has no concept of motion direction
unless you define these things.
 What MOTION TRACKING does is follow points that you designate
through the tracking tools and extrapolate the motion of that point
across the time that the point is in view.
 You can track the position, scale and rotation.
