Web 3.0 What is it?
AGENDA Introduction Brief history of Web 3.0 Example Semantic Web Other Definitions What will it do? A Comprehensive Definition One Man’s Opinion --- video References
Introduction What is Web 3.0 ? No consensus Will it replace Web 2.0 or be an extension of it? Brief discussion of the various opinions of what comprises Web 3.0 Relevant to this workshop Will provide for the ability to extend social media capabilities
History 2001 a story appeared in a scientific article described the concept of Web 3.0 as “a place where machines can read Web pages as much as humans read them…” (roseindia.net) Term “Web 3.0” coined by John Markoff (of the NY Times) in 2006
Example of a Vision for Web 3.0 Web 3.0 browser will give a reasonable and accurate response to questions such as “I want to see a funny movie and then eat at a good Mexican restaurant. What are my options?” (Strickland)
Web 3.0 --- What is it? Some say it is the Semantic Web Semantics of information and services defined Web understand and satisfy requests to use content Semantic web comprised of Design principles Collaborative working groups Enabling technologies Set of standards and view of information that emphasizes information as opposed to processing
Web 3.0 --- What is it? Others say it will be “Powered” by the semantic Web Tim Berners-Lee, 2006: (wikipedia) People keep asking what Web 3.0 is. I think maybe when you’ve got an overlay of scalable vectors – everything rippling and folding and looking misty – on Web 2.0 and access to a semantic Web integrated across a huge space of data, you’ll have access to an unbelievable data resource
Web 3.0 --- What is it? Like a giant database Making connections with information “ to add a layer of meaning on top of the existing Web that would make it less of a catalogue and more of a guide – and even provide the foundation for systems that can reason in a human fashion.” (Markoff 2006) Use AI to create intelligent systems Some see Web 3.0 as replacing the current web --- others see it as a separate network Some want to reject the term Web 3.0 as being too business oriented
What will it do? --- Some Views Intelligent browsers Interpret the context of requests Applications will scan and interpret information on Web pages using software agents Everyone will have a unique profile based on browsing history Used to individualize experiences (eg search)
