Trend
Trends encompass various aspects of human
activity, including:
•Politics
•Beliefs
•Economics
•Lifestyle
•Social life
 Trends are influenced by individuals' or
groups' preferences and orientations.
In arts, fashion, and music, trends reflect prevailing
styles:
Realism movement in art.
Rise of the miniskirt.
Popularity of specific music genres.
Generational influences shape trends, as seen in:
Song preferences during karaoke sessions.
Evolution of portable music players from boom boxes to
MP3 players.
Trends evolve over time, reflecting the dominant
preferences of each era.
In economics, trends reflect long-term statistical changes, such as:
 Rising living costs.
 Unemployment.
 Often influenced by the capitalist mindset, shaping economic
decisions.
For example, the pursuit of education during challenges like the
pandemic is driven by aspirations for a stable and prosperous future.
In politics, trends indicate shifts in ideologies or policies, such as:
 The preference for authoritarian governments in Southeast Asia at
certain points in history.
 The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution in the Philippines is a
historical example of the struggle to restore democracy and
uphold freedom.
Trends are evident in various areas, such as sports (wearable
fitness devices), food (oatmeal and moringa products), medicine
(stem cell treatments), cosmetics (whitening supplements), travel
(paperless tickets and online check-ins), manufacturing (3D
printing), and environmental management (home solar systems).
Overall, a trend is a behavioral pattern adopted by many people
within a specific time frame.
Here are some examples of trend:
• gadgets
• teleserye
• social networking sites
• social advocacies
• drone technology
• denim jeans
• business process outsourcing
• online ticketing
• cashless transactions
Social media often labels popular topics
as "trending," but many are actually fads rather than
trends.
A fad is a short-lived phenomenon that:
 Quickly gains and loses popularity.
 Lacks lasting utility or does not fulfill strong consumer
needs.
Despite their decline, some fads retain loyal followers.
Unlike trends, which have sustained influence, most
"trending" items on platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and
Facebook are fleeting fads.
fad

• hula hoop

enthusiasm for something, especially one that is short-lived. It is a
temporary fashion, a craze, interest, or activity that people follow
enthusiastically, but lasts for a short period of time.

How does a trend differ from a fad? To simply put it, a fad has a definite beginning and a definite end
while a trend though has a certain beginning at a certain point in time or history but, it evolves and
changes as it continues to grow.
Every generation has its own set of fads. Do you now realize what are those? Can you now recall
some stories of what fads came and went during your time? It will surely yield a very interesting list.
Spotting a Trend
A trend is initiated by a person or event that
captures attention and generates significant influence.
 The individual or event that starts a trend is called
a trendsetter.
Trends spread quickly across different sectors, creating
widespread change.
Example:
 The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution in the Philippines was
a globally influential peaceful revolution.
 Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi's movement in India contributed
to India's independence in 1947.
Both events demonstrate how impactful trends can lead
to significant societal change.
Trendspotting refers to studying trends and their
impact on society.
Futurists Rehn and Lindkvist (2013)
differentiate trendspotting from "cool-
hunting," which aims to predict what will
become popular before it does.
Trend analysis:
Builds on trendspotting by developing future
scenarios.
Involves understanding current trends and
forecasting future ones, requiring both
awareness of the present and the ability to
Arzadon et al. (2018) note that trends and
fads are often used interchangeably but have
distinct differences. Both are important for
organizations and individuals to stay updated
with the changing environment. Understanding
the difference between trends and fads is crucial
for survival and adaptability. Trends and fads
can create societal changes, often driven by
dominant cultures serving their own interests.
As students, it's important to analyze and

John was a 4th year student of Philosophy at the University of San
