The captain bears sole
responsibility for the ship and all
aboard it, and it is the captain
who holds virtually absolute
authority on a ship.
They perform functions such as command and administration of
the deck, watches and so on.
First or chief, second, third and junior third or fourth
The carpenter has general charge of hatches and wooden
structures.
The boatswain is the foreman of the deckhands, or seamen.
Quartermasters
steer the ship and maintain its
navigation bridge.
The chief engineer, subordinate only to the master, is responsible
for the ship’s engines.
•First, second, and third assistant engineers supervise the three
engine room watches.
The radio operator is in charge of communications.
The chief steward is in charge of
food.
Meals, prepared by cooks, are
served by steward, who also
maintain passenger cabins and
server the passengers.
A purser and the purser’s assistant are in charge of paperwork
and entertainment.
Mate: an officer of a ship, ranking below the captain.
Crew: all of a ship’s personnel, usually excepting the officer.
Deck: a platform on a ship covering all or part of the hull’s area at any level
and serving as a floor.
Watch: the act of keeping awake and alert in order to look after, protect, or
guard.
Petty: subordinate.
Hatch: an opening in a deck, covered by a hatch cover.
Engine: any machine that uses energy to develop mechanical power.
Paperwork: the keeping of records, filing of report etc.
