WHAT IS WIMAX?
 Users today mostly use Broadband
    connections,Wi-Fi and cellular networks to
    access the Internet.

 WiMAX is
 IP based

 4G technology

 wireless broadband access technology

 performance similar to Wi-Fi, with the coverage
and QOS (quality of service) of cellular networks.

o    WiMAX=Worldwide Interoperability for
    Microwave Access
 Based on IEEE 802.16 standard.

 Founded by Ensemble, CrossSpan, Harris &
    Nokia.

 Ensures compatibility and interoperability
    between broadband wireless access(BWA)
    equipment.

 Intended for WMAN(wireless MAN).
THE WIMAX FORUM

 The WiMAX Forum is a non profit organization
formed to promote the adoption of WiMAX compatible
  products and services
 A major role for the organization is to certify the
  interoperability of WiMAX products.
 Another role of the WiMAX Forum is to promote the
  spread of knowledge about WiMAX.
o GOAL OF WiMAX
To provide high speed Internet access to home and
business subscribers, at a data rate of 30-40 Mbps,
with the 2011 update providing upto 1 Gbps for
    fixed stations

o COVERAGE RANGE OF WiMAX

WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access
(BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and
    3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations.
Wimax Technology Overview
Consists of:
oBase Station
oAccess Point
oSubscriber Station.

The data Traffic channels, which goes through the Base Station .
Bandwidth Allocation for Radio Channel is done by Base Station.

Types of Link are :
Uplink (from Subscriber Station to Base Station )
Downlink( Base Station to Subscriber Station )
`
InfraStructure of Wimax Technology

Wimax Tower :
Its looks like Normal cell Phone Towers.
Wimax Receiver:
Receiver and Antenna looks like a Small Box.

Why WiMAX over 3G?

WiMax spectrum is more economical than 3G.

 The price paid per Hz is as much as

1000 times lower than for 3G spectrum !!
Uses of WiMAX
The bandwidth and range of WiMAX make it suitable
for the following potential applications:
Providing portable mobile broadband connectivity
across cities and countries through a variety of devices.
Providing a wireless alternative to cable and digital
subscriber line (DSL) for "last mile" broadband access.
Providing data, telecommunications (VoIP)
and IPTV services (triple play).
Providing a source of Internet connectivity as part of
a business continuity plan.
Smart grids and metering
