Design and development of an OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR ROUGH TERRAINS:

I was reading a research paper published by Martin Udengaard and Karl Iagnemma, Department of mechani-
cal engineering from MIT when I came across the idea to make an OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR
ROUGH TERRAINS. Lots of prototypes are present in this world for an omni directional vehicle but all these
prototypes use some special kinds of wheels such as MACNUM WHEELS. The problem with these wheels is
that they can not work on rough terrains plus they are very expensive. The need of the hour is to use some
good yet cheap things in our design. So we started working on the ODVRT using some very cheap and com-
monly used things Such as ASOCs( ACTIVE SPLIT OFFSET CASTRES). These ASOCs provide very good
mobility to the vehicle.

Design

The design basically has a basic frame on which two DC geared motors are mounted and each motor has a
wheel mounted on it. Now the basic frame has four links on its periphery on which four casters are mounted.
Their is a main frame which has a ledge on its inner side on which the casters run. The main frame is sup-
ported by three big links on end of which lies an ASOC each. Now the basic frame is in turn controlled by a
servo motor which lies on the main frame and thus provides direction to the vehicle. Now the basic frame acts
to both propagate the vehicle forward and the servo motor by all together rotating the frame makes the vehicle
omni directional. We used three TORSION SPRINGS which provides a suspension system to the vehicle and
thus makes it suitable for rough terrains.

WHY AN OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR ROUGH TERRAINS?

Any vehicle that we have right now works on Acerman steering principle
and has only one DEGREE OF FREEDOM where as the ODVRT has 3
degrees of freedom. This facilitates the movement of the vehicle in any
direction and can be used to park the vehicle even in a narrow space very
easily saving lot of time and fuel. Plus it has three proximity sensors
mounted on its three ends which can easily detect an obstacle and can easily
steer the vehicle away from it. In the present form it can be used for Bomb
 detection and disaster management.

The Rose Brigade
Paintings and murals couldn't delight you,
Trinkets and violets failed to amuse you.
All in the world I've tried my best;
Riveting together my faltering zest.
Rich and affluent I may not be,
I am but a painter and yes that is me.
Idiosyncracies of my stupid heart is hard to tell.
Don't know what I can give you that I can afford well.

Sketching a portrait is the best I can do.
In charcoal,acrylics and pastels too.
My sketches are vibrant with streaks of every hue. By Tridib Das, Fifth Semester,
Bright and loud with shades of prussian blue.

Inspite of my belief that you'd like it every bit,
Thoughts of rejection fizzled out my remaining grit.
Amidst the chaos,a voice in me did pose,
"What can be more appealing then the beauty of a rose?"

 The Valiant Warrior.

The warrior has just risen from the horizon,
 Beginning his journey all alone.
Throughout the vast sky,he leaps himself.
Undaunted by the forces of power and pelf.

As troops in a battle,he is ever brave,
To be courageous like him is what I always crave.
Mired by the eclipse and the thick black cloud.
They are fools to think that he has succumbed to their clout.

Undaunted by all obstacles and the temporary blow.
He is always in high spirits and never feels low.
With a new sense of vigour he once again emerges.
Shining ever brightly, he conquers the vast sky,he traverses. By

I am currently working as Analyst programmer for Accenture for 3 years now. It feels great to be Alumni
of the Mechanical Engineering of DSCE. It was fun and learning experience in the 4 years of my gradua-
tion. We still remember you as the best lecturer during our tenure. Your guidance and discipline would
have shown many towards bright careers. Also, the entire mechanical department is something special to
us.
I have heard about the forums, events and placements for Mechanical students has been in full pace and is
driving the enthusiasm in the students. It makes us really proud to be from such a good college. Most of
us have got good placements are well settled now. Hope the same trend follows with our juniors from
your support and guidance.
We thank you for all the support, motivation, encouragement and not the least - allowing us to have lots
and lots of fun as the normal college student would like to do. We wouldn't have got such a good environ-
ment in other departments and probably other colleges :)

Sir, I would like to add another point. Being part of Mechanical, I couldn't do anything for the field of
Mech as I got into IT. But I would like to sponsor for some good projects or innovations for my juniors. I
will reach out to personally to discuss more about this initiative.

Current Trends in Robotics
                 - By Dr. Bhaskar Pal

Robots are moving away from factory floors to Entertainment, Toys, Personal
Services (Humanoid Robot), Medical Surgery (nanorobots, microrobots), Indus-
trial Atomization (Mining, Harvesting etc), Hazardous Environment (Space, un-
derwater). But major short coming is, robots are inherently uncertain. Uncertainty
arises from environment stochastic, robot stochastic, sensor limitation, noisy sig-
nals and models inaccurate. In the last decade the major improvements in the
field of robotics came through technological breakthroughs in the areas of com-
puting, telecommunication, software, electronic devices, etc. The improvement of
interfaces enlarged the capabilities of tele-operated robots. Tele-operated robots
in hazardous environment and space as well as tele-medical assistance systems
benefited from these improvements. The ‘intelligence’ of systems or components
increased over the last decade too, as reasoning and decision making methods
were developed by the artificial intelligence or computational intelligence re-
search communities and became state-of the art technologies. These technologies
enabled the design of ‘intelligent sensors’, ‘intelligent actuators’, ‘intelligent
planers’ or ‘intelligent decision making units’, which on their turn became sub-
systems of more complex ‘intelligent robots’. A car navigation system supporting
the driver in foggy areas or a construction bulldozer supporting the driver to exe-
cute exact construction plans from a blueprint are just the beginning of the col-
laboration between humans and ‘robots’.

The latest trends in ‘robotic intelligence’ are towards imitating life. Biomimetic
robots, evolutionary robots, emotion controlled robots are just some new research
ideas. Although these approaches are very different in their nature all have a com-
mon goal, to improve the adaptivity and learning capabilities of robots, ‘breeding’
a new generation of robots with better ‘survival’ chances in their specific opera-
tional environment.

Current Trends in Robotics ….

Another area of technological challenge for the next decade is the development
of microrobots and nanorobots for medical applications. Here we are just at the
beginning of a long journey. Robots cleaning clogged blood vessels or repairing
damaged tissues are still to be developed. But still the biggest challenge in robot-
ics for the next decade will be to find the proper balance between human-assisted
systems and fully autonomous ones, thus to combine technological capabilities
with social expectation and requirements.

Departmental Activity on Robotics
With this current trends on robotic research, Mechanical Engineering Department, Dy-
nanada Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore, MECHANOIDS Robo Club actuated ac-
tivities like developing Six-legged-walking –robot, Omni-directional robots, Pick and place
industrial robot with vision system in UG level and Determination of inertia property of un-
known mass in zero gravity by robotic arm, Determination of kinematics problem from in-
verse kinematics using Jacobean matrix, Robotic vision by image processing technique in
PG level.

2010 Student Projects OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR ROUGH TERRAINS SAMRESH JALAN & ASHISH SINGH 7th Semester ,B.E. Mechanical Design and development of an OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR ROUGH TERRAINS: I was reading a research paper published by Martin Udengaard and Karl Iagnemma, Department of mechani- cal engineering from MIT when I came across the idea to make an OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR ROUGH TERRAINS. Lots of prototypes are present in this world for an omni directional vehicle but all these prototypes use some special kinds of wheels such as MACNUM WHEELS. The problem with these wheels is that they can not work on rough terrains plus they are very expensive. The need of the hour is to use some good yet cheap things in our design. So we started working on the ODVRT using some very cheap and com- monly used things Such as ASOCs( ACTIVE SPLIT OFFSET CASTRES). These ASOCs provide very good mobility to the vehicle. Design The design basically has a basic frame on which two DC geared motors are mounted and each motor has a wheel mounted on it. Now the basic frame has four links on its periphery on which four casters are mounted. Their is a main frame which has a ledge on its inner side on which the casters run. The main frame is sup- ported by three big links on end of which lies an ASOC each. Now the basic frame is in turn controlled by a servo motor which lies on the main frame and thus provides direction to the vehicle. Now the basic frame acts to both propagate the vehicle forward and the servo motor by all together rotating the frame makes the vehicle omni directional. We used three TORSION SPRINGS which provides a suspension system to the vehicle and thus makes it suitable for rough terrains. WHY AN OMNI DIRECTIONAL VEHICLE FOR ROUGH TERRAINS? Any vehicle that we have right now works on Acerman steering principle and has only one DEGREE OF FREEDOM where as the ODVRT has 3 degrees of freedom. This facilitates the movement of the vehicle in any direction and can be used to park the vehicle even in a narrow space very easily saving lot of time and fuel. Plus it has three proximity sensors mounted on its three ends which can easily detect an obstacle and can easily steer the vehicle away from it. In the present form it can be used for Bomb detection and disaster management. 8

2010 Wordsmith’s The Rose Brigade Paintings and murals couldn't delight you, Trinkets and violets failed to amuse you. All in the world I've tried my best; Riveting together my faltering zest. Rich and affluent I may not be, I am but a painter and yes that is me. Idiosyncracies of my stupid heart is hard to tell. Don't know what I can give you that I can afford well. Sketching a portrait is the best I can do. In charcoal, acrylics and pastels too. My sketches are vibrant with streaks of every hue. By Tridib Das, Fifth Semester, Bright and loud with shades of prussian blue. BE , Mechanical Inspite of my belief that you'd like it every bit, Thoughts of rejection fizzled out my remaining grit. Amidst the chaos,a voice in me did pose, "What can be more appealing then the beauty of a rose?" The Valiant Warrior. The warrior has just risen from the horizon, Beginning his journey all alone. Throughout the vast sky,he leaps himself. Undaunted by the forces of power and pelf. As troops in a battle,he is ever brave, To be courageous like him is what I always crave. 2010 Alumni Messages I am currently working as Analyst programmer for Accenture for 3 years now. It feels great to be Alumni of the Mechanical Engineering of DSCE. It was fun and learning experience in the 4 years of my gradua- tion. We still remember you as the best lecturer during our tenure. Your guidance and discipline would have shown many towards bright careers. Also, the entire mechanical department is something special to us. I have heard about the forums, events and placements for Mechanical students has been in full pace and is driving the enthusiasm in the students. It makes us really proud to be from such a good college. Most of us have got good placements are well settled now. Hope the same trend follows with our juniors from your support and guidance. We thank you for all the support, motivation, encouragement and not the least - allowing us to have lots and lots of fun as the normal college student would like to do. We wouldn't have got such a good environ- ment in other departments and probably other colleges :) Sir, I would like to add another point. Being part of Mechanical, I couldn't do anything for the field of Mech as I got into IT. But I would like to sponsor for some good projects or innovations for my juniors. I will reach out to personally to discuss more about this initiative. -- Regards, Bharat Gudala 9900433099 / This article was recieved by Dr.CP.S.Prakash as a e-mail attachment./ 16 16

2010 Alumni Messages "Irrespective of local and global economic conditions (boom or recession), skills and talent are always recognized if projected (sometimes advertised) in the right way. Your employ-ability factor depends on how you project your strengths (and some times weak- nesses in a positive way) at the right time to your probable employer to strike the right chord every single time.. If this is not your game then try the entrepreneurial way ( be the king instead of being a king maker).. and gracefully, this world is still a better place to live (be it the ability to shape up your career or to make money).. All is still well !!!!!!!!! 2010 Current Trends inRobotics - By Dr. Bhaskar Pal Robots are moving away from factory floors to Entertainment, Toys, Personal Services (Humanoid Robot), Medical Surgery (nanorobots, microrobots), Indus- trial Atomization (Mining, Harvesting etc), Hazardous Environment (Space, un- derwater). But major short coming is, robots are inherently uncertain. Uncertainty arises from environment stochastic, robot stochastic, sensor limitation, noisy sig- nals and models inaccurate. In the last decade the major improvements in the field of robotics came through technological breakthroughs in the areas of com- puting, telecommunication, software, electronic devices, etc. The improvement of interfaces enlarged the capabilities of tele-operated robots. Tele-operated robots in hazardous environment and space as well as tele-medical assistance systems benefited from these improvements. The ‘intelligence’ of systems or components increased over the last decade too, as reasoning and decision making methods were developed by the artificial intelligence or computational intelligence re- search communities and became state-of the art technologies. These technologies enabled the design of ‘intelligent sensors’, ‘intelligent actuators’, ‘intelligent planers’ or ‘intelligent decision making units’, which on their turn became sub- systems of more complex ‘intelligent robots’. A car navigation system supporting the driver in foggy areas or a construction bulldozer supporting the driver to exe- cute exact construction plans from a blueprint are just the beginning of the col- laboration between humans and ‘robots’. The latest trends in ‘robotic intelligence’ are towards imitating life. Biomimetic robots, evolutionary robots, emotion controlled robots are just some new research ideas. Although these approaches are very different in their nature all have a com- mon goal, to improve the adaptivity and learning capabilities of robots, ‘breeding’ a new generation of robots with better ‘survival’ chances in their specific opera- tional environment. 20

2010 Current Trends inRobotics …. Another area of technological challenge for the next decade is the development of microrobots and nanorobots for medical applications. Here we are just at the beginning of a long journey. Robots cleaning clogged blood vessels or repairing damaged tissues are still to be developed. But still the biggest challenge in robot- ics for the next decade will be to find the proper balance between human-assisted systems and fully autonomous ones, thus to combine technological capabilities with social expectation and requirements. Departmental Activity on Robotics With this current trends on robotic research, Mechanical Engineering Department, Dy- nanada Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore, MECHANOIDS Robo Club actuated ac- tivities like developing Six-legged-walking –robot, Omni-directional robots, Pick and place industrial robot with vision system in UG level and Determination of inertia property of un- known mass in zero gravity by robotic arm, Determination of kinematics problem from in- verse kinematics using Jacobean matrix, Robotic vision by image processing technique in PG level. 21
