How does YouTube
use your collected
information?
Are they showing you everything?
Tailored Content
YouTube filters your searches and
recommendations to only show content that
they believe will interest you.
Two people can search the same thing, but
attain different results because of the
information gathered from previous clicks,
location and viewing device.

Advertiser Friendly
Demonetization has spread across YouTube, halting their
creators income even if the content is family friendly.

Advertisers Means:

account with out prior notice
You are guilty until proven innocent when flagged
for copyright infringement, even if all the content
is your own
Monetization goes to a third party without
notification
Online Harassment

YouTube’s Harassment Problem
YouTube’s creators and audience are
primarily aged between 16-35
65% of users in this age bracket have been a
victim by some form of online harassment
Young women are more at risk of being
harassed online than their male peers.
Duggan, M. (2014). Online Harassment. Pew Research Centre Available: http://www.pewinternet.org/2014/10/22/online-harassment/

How Trolls Hide
It is easy set up an anonymous account on
YouTube
YouTube can delete the channel, but the real
person can hide behind a fake username
Only 5% of those that take action against their
harasser reports the issue to law enforcement
Unfortunately, online harassment has become the
norm as 60% of victims do nothing about it

Things to remember
 If you don’t want to give up your personal information,
don’t use YouTube
 YouTube places advertisers above those that bring an
audience to the platform
 Online harassment is not ok. Report them as soon as
possible
