Q.5: How did you attract/address
your audience?
Our media product has many ways in attracting the audience such as the diegetic and non-diegetic
sound used, low-key lighting, intense scenes, build up of suspense and shocking images.
The intense non-diegetic sound used on the opening scene can attract all ages as the sound in very
intense and the scene includes a murderer chasing a girl where the elevator doors are shutting. This
will attract many people as it will make them very curious as of if he gets there in time. The fact that
he is wearing all black represents the fact that he is a murderer as he is wearing all black which is a
stereotype of what a murderer’s clothes would be like and also the fact that he is holding a fire
extinguisher would attract people more as it makes the scene more intense because if the girl gets
caught by this man then the consequences for her would be way more severe and also they would be
in an elevator where she would have no where to go and no one would hear her scream. This could
appeal to teenager boys as it is a stereotype for these kind of people to enjoy violence.
Scenes like these could also terrify many viewers such as children however the film would be
unsuitable for children anyway due to the contents of the film. There are also other violent scenes
throughout the film which could terrify a lot of the viewers due to the shock and violent scenery.
They are used throughout the whole film however one particular example is in the opening scene
where an establishing shot is used and one of the shots was on a dead body with a fire extinguisher
next to her head and blood all around her head. An establishing shot is used to show the viewers
around the dark room of which the murderer spends most of his time. A high angle shot is used to
show the dead body representing the fact that the murderer is way above other humans due to his
evil personality of killing people. Low-key lighting is used in this scene as it reflects on the murderers
personality along with intense music and also a lot of suspense as someone knocks on the door and
he moves very slowly to open it. We used non-diegetic sound of a heartbeat to show the murderers
heartbeat increase as the detective knocks. This added way more suspense which attracts the viewers
in a strong way.
This links back to many generic conventions of thriller as we interviewed a few people and find out
that viewers would expect to see blood, deaths, mystery, murder, weapons and other things in a
typical thriller movie.
