Coronation and Living Through Learning spent the morning at West End Primary School in Mitchell’s Plain, bringing the ‘Readers are Leaders’ experience to 1 700 learners. The programme included a lively song and marching band performance, with well-loved singer Anslin Gysman joining in, a storytelling session by celebrated author and performer Gcina Mhlophe, and a cultural dress fashion show. Each child also received a surprise book to take home – for some, a new experience. Grade 4 learner Zaakir Bastra shared a few words on behalf of the school: “Some of us received our very first books today and that is something we will always remember. Thanks for reminding us that reading and learning can be so joyful!”

Coronation Book Week, in partnership with the Principals Academy Trust, reaches more than 12 000 Foundation Phase learners and teachers across 42 schools in the Western Cape. For young learners, reading offers a joyful escape into the world of books. This year’s focus is on nurturing a love of reading through South African stories, while equipping teachers with new tools to bring learning to life in the classroom. It has been inspiring to witness the power that stories have to connect learning across subjects – strengthening literacy, numeracy, and essential life skills. A highlight of the week was our visit to Westlake Primary. Our team, including Coronation Foundation Trustee Cindy Hess Robertson CA(SA), read to the learners.
