About us

PROTEC (Programme for Technological Careers) is a national, independent, non-profit organisation that provides holistic, high-quality education and career support programme development in the fields of Mathematics, Science, Technology, English, and World of Work life skills training. We also run an impactful teacher support programme in many of the programme’s feeder schools. Our work can be evaluated against our vision to be a leading service provider within the STEM education sectors, contributing to an increase in the technologically skilled human resource pool in South Africa and promoting lifelong learning. PROTEC’s head office is based in Randburg, Johannesburg, and it has a network of nine branches and seven projects in six provinces throughout the country. Management and staff PROTEC employs 23 full-time staff members in Johannesburg and 10 in our provincial branches, which make up the national network and are managed by locally employed branch managers who are accountable to local community boards. PROTEC employs approximately 191 part-time tutors/ facilitators. PROTEC Projects are managed by local education centres in partnership with PROTEC nationally. History In 2022, PROTEC is celebrating 40 years of successful educational and career preparation support for high school students throughout the country. PROTEC was established in 1982 in Soweto by a group of concerned engineers from the South African Institute of Civil Engineers, specifically to help high school children in disadvantaged communities prepare for successful careers in sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The programme launched with 67 students, and since then it has provided opportunities for over 30 000 students to pursue engineering, science, technology, and a wide range of related careers. The early success of the project led to PROTEC’s expansion into a national programme, and later included the addition of the teacher support programme.

Every year we see hundreds of thousands of young people enter a period with a mixture of trepidation and cautious optimism. The end is in sight if one can overcome the obstacles. PROTEC stands with the aprox. 850 000+ matrics that will be writing exams. We will cheer you on. Good Luck!

What an incredible day! We are buzzing with energy and inspiration after yesterday's successful Teacher Workshop, the official launch of a game-changing partnership between Ardagh Group, Premier FMCG (Pty) Ltd and PROTEC STEM. We are thrilled to officially announce this powerful collaboration, united by a single, crucial mission: to tackle period poverty head-on and ensure every girl learner has the resources she needs to thrive. This initiative is about more than just providing sanitary goods; it's about restoring dignity, building confidence, and empowering our young women to pursue their dreams without interruption. The passionate teachers who joined us yesterday are the first wave of champions for this cause, and their dedication was truly inspiring. A huge thank you to our phenomenal partners, Ardagh Group for their vision and commitment, and Premier FMCG (Pty) Ltd for their invaluable products and expertise. This workshop was just the beginning! We are incredibly excited for the full program rollout in 2026, which will bring a regular supply of essential products to girl learners in 6 of our target schools. The future is bright, and together, we are creating a world where every girl can reach her full potential. • PROTEC recently held a strategy conference for 2 days, bringing together the entire national team, including Branch Managers from KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. The session, led by our CEO Mr. Balan Moodley, provided an opportunity to reflect on common challenges, share best practices, and explore innovative approaches to advancing PROTEC’s programmes and impact. As we look ahead, we remain committed to strengthening our initiatives, fostering collaboration, and driving meaningful change in the education and youth development sectors. The focus is clearly on our 5 Strategic Pillars for the next 5 years: Growth, Sustainability, High Quality Programmes, Human Capital and Alumni. #PROTECPROUD #PROTEC #Education #Leadership #Strategy #Innovation #Impact #southafrica🇿🇦
