EMPLOYEE EMPOWERMENT FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE - LESSONS FROM NSSF It’s easy to say we are Customer-Centric. It’s easy to say our people are our most important asset. It’s easy to put great words on office walls but, Until a company actually lets its employees take the lead, those buzzwords are just noise. Customers cannot love your brand until your staff feels trusted and empowered. My first engagement with National Social Security Fund (NSSF) as a Customer Experience Consultant was informed by employee satisfaction survey feedback. I later learned that the employees had asked for a change. The employee satisfaction feedback was that they needed a local trainer they could resonate with. The leaders at the NSSF acted on this employee feedback. My company, Mwoyo Experience, was brought on board on a trial basis, pending feedback from the employees trained on their experience. Think about this: The teams who understood their training need chose their own solution. As a precursor to trainings, I find it commendable that representatives of the NSSF team to be trained -ranging from the Customer Experience, Finance, to Compliance teams, among others, sit down with us to understand the intervention. This reminds me of what seasoned leader Francis Kamulegeya said when referring to great leaders. They have their "Eyes on, Nose in, and Hands off." NSSF leaders kept their eyes on the goal (employee morale, better service) and their Nose in to understand the need (a local trainer), but kept their "Hands off" the solution, trusting the employees to choose the right path. Why Is Employee Empowerment a Winning Strategy? I believe the Fund's results for FY 2024/25 are testament to this. The Fund declared an interest of 13.5%. Customer Satisfaction improved from 87% to 88%; Staff engagement increased from 89% to 91% vs. FY 2023/24. The Total Revenue of UGX 3.52 Trillion & member contributions of UGX 2.13 Trillion are an improvement of 11%, 10% respectively Vs. FY 2023/24. The Year-on-Year performance improvement shows that their strategy is a winning one. 5 Lessons Leaders Can Learn from NSSF 1. Act on Employee Feedback. They asked for a local trainer; NSSF delivered. When employees fill in surveys & no action is taken, they learn to withhold their opinion. 2. Practice 'Hands Off'. Leaders keep their Eyes On the goal & Nose In to understand the need, but their Hands Off the solution. Trust your people to execute. 3. Grant Veto Power. Let the teams who own the problem own the solution. Ownership equals results. 4. Invest in Employee Exposure Fund learning that takes staff to world-class standards. For an employee to give excellent service, they need to know what excellent service looks like. 5. Trust Creates Value. Employee empowerment makes them own their performance, which leads to peak performance. As we celebrate Customer Experience Month, let's empower our employees because they are crucial partners for company success. #EmployeeEmpowerment
