What started as a materials breakthrough is now a scalable battery component: batenefleece™, a porous metallic fleece that replaces conventional metal foils — making batteries faster, lighter, and more resource-efficient. Still early days. But the potential? Huge.

In deep tech, understanding is the ground floor. This study, rooted in Max Planck Society research and closely linked to our own development path, explores how a small shift at the interface enables thick electrodes to perform without compromise. What’s Next for Batteries in Germany? Yesterday, Batene had the honor of contributing to the Deutscher Bundestag's Committee for Education, Research, and Technology Assessment. Alongside an incredible group of experts – Prof. Martin Winter (MEET Battery Research Center), Prof. Dr. Christoph Herrmann (TU Braunschweig), Rebekka Mueller (cylib), Dr. Peter Lamp (BMW Group), and Thanh Nguyen Thi Dieu (Batene) – the discussion highlighted a unified message: Federal research funding in battery technology is essential for Germany’s and Europe’s industrial competitiveness, energy independence, and innovation leadership. We extend our sincere thanks to Kai Gehring, the committee chair, for his outstanding leadership in guiding these critical discussions. 🔋 Batene’s Perspective: As a Max Planck Society spin-off and deep-tech startup, we brought a practical lens to the discussion, emphasizing three key areas where action is urgently needed: 1️⃣ Bridging the Gap – From Lab to Market Translation research is the missing link in Germany’s innovation pipeline. Batteries need the same systematic approach as translational research in medicine – turning breakthroughs into real-world impact. 2️⃣ A European Battery Alliance – Think Airbus Europe must act as one. Common standards, unified investments, and bold collaboration will shift Europe from being a follower to a first-mover in the global battery industry. 3️⃣ Without Talents, No Innovation Electrochemistry is at the heart of battery technology, yet it remains a niche field in education and careers. To secure Europe’s future in batteries, we need targeted programs to develop specialists in this critical area and attract global talent to build a strong, competitive workforce. Why This Matters At Batene, we believe Europe has the innovation, expertise, and talent to lead the global battery revolution. Yesterday’s hearing showed how aligned the battery community already is.
