Zombies TC

From DoomWiki.org

Zombies TC is a total conversion based on the movie Dawn of the Dead. It was made in 1997 by T.C.H.G. It borrows the film's music, weaponry and basic plot. Judging from the status bar picture, the player is likely supposed to be controlling the character Peter from the film.

The mod is notable for the use of photo realistic textures.

MAP02 featured one of the earliest uses of the silent teleport trick, making the building in the first area appear to be several stories high from inside.[citation needed]

Maps[edit]

  • MAP01: TV Studio
  • MAP02: House
  • MAP03: Refuel
  • MAP04: Shopping Center
  • MAP05: Close the Outer Door
  • MAP06: Rockers Attack
  • MAP07: Retreat
  • MAP08: The City
  • MAP09: Military Base
  • MAP10: Oil Refinery (modified level from Doomsday)
  • MAP11: The Lost Island
  • MAP12: ??? (secret level)

Spoiler Warning: Plot details follow.

The maps are all based around areas in the movie. The player starts in the TV studio, then works their way through a tear gas filled apartment block (with clever use of the floor damage effect). After getting to the chopper on the roof, the player stops to refuel at a landing strip and then proceeds to the mall where most of the movie was spent. After a couple of mall levels, the action moves onto some levels which resemble "Day Of The Dead". After a final struggle through a zombie-infested refueling base in map 10, the player stands alone on a desert island with no fuel and no shelter, and only the seagulls for company.

The level design, though relatively undetailed, makes sense and can pass as realistic for its time, standing in contrast to the abstract designs in Doom. The levels are generally non-linear and large, using the silent teleporter illusion to give a greater sense of layering and scale, and have a tendency for ample piles of ammunition and sending huge hordes of enemies at the player. Object placement is often strange, exemplified by there being rooms with stockpiles of armor/health bonuses or 2+ sets of armor, and some zombies being stuck to the walls or placed outside of the playable level where the player cannot interact with them. There are many new decorative objects, including wooden crates that can be pushed with some finesse and act as barricades—but be careful, as it takes almost two full minutes of chainsawing a crate to break it if you get stuck behind one.

Spoilers end here.

Enemies[edit]

The enemies have been replaced by digitized versions of the team members in various guises, from female zombies carrying decapitated heads to shotgun-wielding bikers. The graphics are of a relatively poor standard, mainly because the pictures were taken with a digital camera and had to be converted to the Doom palette. Unless stated, all enemies use melee attacks.

  • Girl with head - replaces the imp, sharing sprite space with the mall security guy. When in melee range, she attacks with her severed (but still living) head, which can hit at range if the player backs off.
  • Shotgun biker - replaces the baron of Hell, fires off a lethal shotgun blast, wears a trench-coat. They can be tricky in groups.
  • Pistol biker - replaces the Hell knight, wears white and fires at the player. Similar to the shotgun biker, though not as tough.
  • Zombie bloke - replaces the demon, wears a flannel shirt.
  • Mall security - or a cop, replaces the former human and fires pistol rounds. Transforms into zombie mall security after taking enough damage, but without the rifle drop.
  • Zombie mall security - replaces the shotgun sergeant. Shoots like mall security, is slightly weaker, bleeding, and has blue skin. Drops a rifle upon death.
  • Crazed bloody handed guy - replaces the lost soul. A weak enemy that can charge at the player.
  • Civilian - replaces the cyberdemon. He does nothing, just walks around.

Weaponry[edit]

The weapons have been given a makeover and are (for the most part) more powerful than their base Doom counterparts. The player's ammunition capacity has also been greatly increased.

  • Knife - Replaces the fist, basically the same.
  • Chainsaw - Same as the original Doom chainsaw, but shreds twice as fast.
  • Revolver - Replaces the pistol, now fires slightly faster.
  • Rifle - Replaces the shotgun.
  • M-16 - Replaces the chaingun, now fires faster.
  • Bazooka - Replaces the rocket launcher.
  • TE-22 - Replaces the plasma rifle. Supposedly a hammer drill, but in fact it fires bullets at an insanely fast rate.
  • The Finger - Replaces the BFG, and can only be obtained via cheats. Does nothing but flip the player off, making it completely useless.

Items[edit]

Most of the item sprites have changed from the original Doom ones, usually having something to do with the movie.

  • The health bonus is a chocolate bar
  • The armor bonus is a helmet
  • The soul sphere is a scantily clad woman
  • Stimpacks are piles of junk food
  • Medikits are bandages and disinfectant
  • The computer area map is a floor plan blueprint
  • Security armor is now a jacket
  • Combat armor is a rugby suit
  • Light amplification goggles are a torch
  • Radiation suits are now gas masks
  • There are 3 kinds of keys:
    • Main key : A Golden latch key
    • EC Key  : A red keycard
    • Crowbar  : A crowbar, opens "jammed" doors

Cheats[edit]

The cheat codes have been changed, some now being German words or other pop culture references. They, with their Doom II equivalents, are:

  • heino - idmus (Change music)
  • tsif - idchoppers (Give chainsaw)
  • limid - iddqd (God mode)
  • oma - idfa (Ammo)
  • dncbd - idkfa (Ammo and keys)
  • dontdothis - idclip (Noclip)
  • gohome - idclev (Change level)
  • hereiam - idmypos (Show player position)
  • bier - iddt (Show objects in the map)
  • neinnein - idbeholdv (Invulnerability sphere)
  • abcdefg - idbeholds (Berserk)
  • harvey - idbeholdi (Partial invisibility sphere)
  • abcalarm - idbeholdr (Radiation suit)
  • showme - idbeholdm (Computer area map)
  • zippo - idbeholdl (Lite-amp goggles)

Additional cheat codes are defined via DeHackEd, though they are useless; nope replaces Doom's idspispopd code, but does not work because Zombies TC is for Doom II, and qpdkr replaces idbehold but does not display useful information because all the powerup cheat codes are renamed.
