Google’s AI Mode is not just another AI skin over Search It’s turning into something very different, and marketers need to pay attention Here’s what we learned from Semrush’s June 2025 study of 5,000 keywords across 4 platforms: → 92% of AI Mode responses included sidebar links → Only 54% of domains matched traditional Google Search results → Commercial queries got answers twice as long as informational ones → Reddit was the top source across all large language models So what does this tell us? AI Mode is moving away from how Google Search has always worked It actually behaves more like ChatGPT than Google’s own AI Overviews Perplexity had the highest overlap with traditional Google, 91% of domains, 82% of URLs AI Mode? Just 54% domain overlap That means the brands winning in AI Mode are not always the ones dominating search results And when it comes to format, AI Mode has a clear favorite 92% of responses come with sidebar links Those sidebars pull from an average of 7 unique domains Only 1.7% of answers had no links at all It gets more interesting: → Commercial and transactional queries triggered longer responses → Navigational queries were more likely to show traditional link layouts → Reddit, YouTube, and Facebook led citation sources Even platforms like Mapbox and OpenStreetMap, usually invisible in Google, got strong AI visibility Why? The GEO Revolution: Why Keywords Are Dead and Problem Spaces Are the Future of Search Here's why: 1️⃣ The Rise of GEO: More Than Just a New Acronym What if I told you that keywords – the foundation of SEO for decades – are becoming obsolete? While traditional SEO focuses on ranking in search engines, GEO optimises content for discovery by Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Google's AI mode, and Gemini. It's an entirely new framework that acknowledges how differently AI processes information. Think about it: when you use ChatGPT, you don't type keywords. You describe problems and needs in natural language. This completely changes the optimisation game. 2️⃣ Problem Spaces: The New Frontier of Search In the GEO world, we optimise for problem spaces, not keywords. A problem space consists of two elements: - A start state (the user's problem) - A goal state (the solution they seek) When someone asks an AI, "I need a formal dress for a cruise ship evening event with free returns," they're not using keywords. They're describing their problem space. The AI then works to bridge that gap by understanding the context, requirements, and implicit needs behind the query. This is why traditional keyword research is being replaced by understanding Category Entry Points (CEPs) – the triggers, situations, and motivations that prompt consumers to consider your product category. 3️⃣ Information Foraging: Why AI Is Winning the Search Battle Have you noticed how exhausting it can be to research something online these days? This is because SEO practices have inadvertently increased what's called "information gain rate" – the cost of obtaining valuable information relative to its worth. Those 4,000-word articles filled with fluff are a pain to read. AI search eliminates this problem. It gathers, filters, and synthesises information, dramatically reducing cognitive load. 4️⃣ The Mutual Goal State: Where Business Meets User Needs Picture two problem spaces intersecting – the user's and the business's. Users enter a problem space seeking solutions. Businesses enter their own problem space seeking customers. GEO works when these align in what I call a "mutual goal state." To achieve this alignment, businesses must: - Understand what problems their products/services solve - Identify all Category Entry Points (CEPs) - Create content around specific use cases and solutions - Build signals focused on problem-solving, not just features. Google has announced another Update, and it's the first spam-specific update we've seen this year. 🔵What it is: Google's calling it a "normal spam update" that will take a few weeks to roll out across all languages and locations. It's their first algorithm update since the June 2025 core update finished in July. 🟢What it's targeting: Google hasn't specified exactly what types of spam this update is hunting, but based on their recent focus, expect it to hit the usual suspects - AI content farms, expired domain abuse, scaled content manipulation, and dodgy link schemes. Given how aggressive they've been about AI-generated content farms and site reputation abuse lately, this update is probably fine-tuning their spam detection systems to catch more sophisticated manipulation attempts. 🟣 Should you be worried? If you've been following proper SEO practices and creating content for humans rather than search engines, probably not. These updates typically target obvious manipulation rather than genuine business websites. If you've been experimenting with those "AI GEO SEO hacks" everyone's been flogging on LinkedIn... well, the next few weeks might be interesting for you. 🟠 What to do now? Nothing. Sit tight, as always. Don't panic if you see some ranking fluctuations over the next few weeks - spam updates can cause temporary volatility even for legitimate sites. Don't start frantically changing your content strategy based on daily ranking movements.
